The\u00a0<\/span>AI4Health<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Public Engagement Showcase brought together creativity, collaboration, and communication,\u00a0key ingredients in bridging the gap between\u00a0cutting-edge\u00a0AI research and the public it serves. Held at the\u00a0<\/span>Data Observatory<\/span><\/a>\u00a0at Imperial College London, the event challenged PhD researchers to present their work in a way that would engage not only academics but also members of the public, industry leaders, and policymakers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The scenario was ambitious: imagine a visit from Wes Streeting, the UK\u2019s Secretary of State for\u00a0Health\u00a0and Social Care, alongside a representative from a leading Silicon Valley technology company, NHS patients, and even family members,\u00a0all eager to understand how AI4Health is shaping the future of healthcare.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Three teams – Explorer, Everest, and Patagonia – rose to the challenge, each delivering an imaginative take on how to communicate the AI4Health mission and impact.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Team Everest\u00a0took home the top prize with their striking\u00a0<\/span>\u201cAI4Health Tube Map\u201d<\/span><\/b>\u00a0presentation. Using the familiar design of the London Underground, they mapped AI4Health\u2019s diverse research areas as interconnected lines,\u00a0from\u00a0<\/span>scientific impact<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>AI in healthcare<\/span><\/i>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>graduate outcomes<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>collaborations<\/span><\/i>. Their creative approach not only made complex ideas visually engaging but also underscored how AI4Health connects multiple disciplines and sectors to move healthcare forward.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Team Explorer\u00a0impressed the audience by imagining a future 10-year\u00a0space exploration\u00a0roadmap for AI and healthcare. Their \u201cjourney through innovation\u201d explored how advances such as surgical robotics, remote operations, and ambient voice technologies could revolutionise clinical practice, all linked to the UK\u2019s long-term health strategy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Team Patagonia\u00a0showcased\u00a0AI4Health\u2019s global impact through data storytelling. They\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0that citations of AI4Health research have increased by\u00a0<\/span>more than 80% over the past two years<\/span><\/b>, driven by interdisciplinary collaborations and world-class training.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The second visual compared h-index distributions across AI4Health PhD cohorts (2019\u20132023), showing how each new generation builds upon the achievements of earlier ones,\u00a0strengthening the Centre\u2019s reputation for impactful, high-quality research.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
