Hello,<\/span>\u00a0my name is Aizaan<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>I\u2019m<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span>UKRI<\/span>\u00a0AI4Health PhD Candidate in Artificial Intelligence\u00a0<\/span>(AI)\u00a0<\/span>and Machine Learning<\/span>\u00a0(ML)<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>I\u2019m<\/span>\u00a0a Malaysian-born, British-trained physician with\u00a0<\/span>previous<\/span>\u00a0experience in neurology, medical education,\u00a0<\/span>epidemiology,<\/span>\u00a0and public health. My\u00a0<\/span>research\u00a0<\/span>project looks at using AI to diagnose disease progression in brain\u00a0<\/span>tumours<\/span>\u00a0from speech data collected from a mobile app developed by The Brain\u00a0<\/span>Tumour<\/span>\u00a0Charity<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

In September 2021, I\u00a0<\/span>was successfully<\/span>\u00a0selected as a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Data Science for All\/ Women (DS4A)<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>Fe<\/span>llow<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0was invited to<\/span>\u00a0participate in the<\/span>ir<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Fall 2021 training\u00a0<\/span>programme<\/span>. This free technical\u00a0<\/span>programme<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span>s open to candidates in Europe and North America and less than 5% of ~5000 applicants usually get admitted.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>programme<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span>s geared towards empowering women from underrepresented groups to pursue careers in data science<\/span>\u00a0and t<\/span>he Fellowship consisted of two tracks: Executives (for those planning on pursuing formal leadership roles in data-driven teams) and Practitioners (for those intending to become data scientists\/ analysts\/ quantitative researchers). Executives receive training using no-code cases<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0whilst Practitioners\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a0trained to use Python, SQL and Tableau in real-world cases.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\"\"All applicants\u00a0are required to\u00a0submit an application\u00a0form along with their CV and attend a 30-minute online interview.\u00a0\u00a0Practitioner applicants\u00a0are also required to sit a one-hour online assessment on core data science skills. As I was interested in consolidating my knowledge\u00a0of\u00a0statistics, epidemiology,\u00a0and machine learning, I chose to apply as a Practitioner. I was tested on my knowledge of interpreting data, Python, database querying as well as basic Physics! Sitting that test made me\u00a0realise\u00a0how much I still needed to learn in data\u00a0science,\u00a0and I made peace with the fact that I might not be accepted for the\u00a0programme.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Within a week of applying, however, I was informed that I had been shortlisted for an interview. I was interviewed by one of the teaching assistants on the programme and we had a relatively informal discussion about my PhD as well as my motivation and vision should I be selected as a DS4A Fellow. I thoroughly enjoyed this process as whether I got accepted or not, I found myself connecting with someone across the Atlantic who was as passionate about their research and data science as I was. In less than a week, I was informed that I was accepted! Later, I also found out that I was the only clinician in my cohort.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0programme<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The 7-week\u00a0programme\u00a0consisted of data science lectures delivered on Saturdays, career development lectures on Tuesdays,\u00a0meetings and career talks from different organisations,\u00a0weekly meetings with mentors\u00a0and\u00a0weekly meetings with teaching assistants culminating in a project called Capstone which required the application of skills and knowledge taught in an academic\u00a0programme. The\u00a0programme\u00a0was extremely well\u00a0organised\u00a0and there\u00a0were\u00a0always Correlation One staff members at hand to assist with any technical or administrative queries. We had 2-3 project and career-development deliverables to submit per week\u00a0and were given lifetime access to the DS4A training and careers portal.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Project showcase\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The fellowship culminated in a project showcase followed by a Grand Finale where the winning teams were selected. I was matched with team members from the same time zones who were able to dedicate similar amounts of time to the Capstone project. With guidance from our mentor and teaching assistants, we were tasked with solving a business problem or completing a social impact project using data-driven methods. My team was fortunate to have our mentor, Dr. Detlef Nauck, who was the Head of AI and Data Science Research at BT and a visiting professor at Bournemouth University.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The team<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Winning the\u00a0Crowd\u00a0Favourite\u00a0Project Award<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

It was a challenging process to identify a problem, find suitable datasets and implement unfamiliar methods when we could not meet in person. However, my teammates, mentor and teaching assistants carved time into their schedule (on top of their day jobs!) to make our project a success.\u00a0Our efforts were rewarded when we won the Crowd\u00a0Favourite\u00a0Project award at the Grand Finale. The DS4A\/Women fellowship\u00a0programme\u00a0certainly was an experience I will never forget.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I thoroughly enjoyed working with such a diverse group of women who were all keen to learn, humble, experienced, accomplished and dedicated. I will not easily forget when we attended lectures, coded, wrote our report, practised our presentation, and designed our datafolio online together. Not only did my data analytics skills immensely improve during this period, my attitude and approach to research also changed for the better. I became more comfortable with the idea of venturing into the unknown, learning along the way and trusting my abilities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reflection<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

With my clinical medical background where I had little room for error, I initially found the fear of making mistakes in my PhD\u00a0paralysing. With my mentor\u2019s guidance, I slowly\u00a0realised\u00a0that in research failures are very much part of the process, and the trick is to be consistent with my work, such that the mistakes are made\u00a0frequently\u00a0and\u00a0are then\u00a0rid\u00a0of\u00a0early on.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The career development exercises that we did with our mentor also helped me\u00a0take ownership of\u00a0my diverse experiences as well as gain better clarity of my strengths and professional direction. I am\u00a0extremely\u00a0grateful\u00a0to have been selected for this\u00a0programme\u00a0and I hope that retelling my experiences will be of some\u00a0assistance\u00a0to others who are embarking on similar paths.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

My team consisted of masters-degree holders and PhD students from the fields of biology, mathematics, mechanical engineering, AI, epidemiology, econometrics,\u00a0and clinical medicine. We were\u00a0all\u00a0interested in the wealth of data on COVID-19 from\u00a0freely available\u00a0repositories and decided to study the impact of vaccine misinformation and uptake. Along with a\u00a0project\u00a0report,\u00a0datafolio\u00a0and\u00a0PowerPoint\u00a0presentation, my team also developed a\u00a0<\/span>dashboard<\/span><\/a>\u00a0where users can view where and when misinformation occurred and\u00a0how this correlated with\u00a0vaccine uptake at the same time and place.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He was very supportive and involved in both our career and\u00a0Capstone project development. He even linked us to the developers of\u00a0<\/span>Einblick<\/span><\/a>, a no-code data analytics platform, in case we needed extra support. Our teaching assistants were data scientists, PhD students, and post-doctoral fellows from Ivy League institutions who helped clarify the problem we were solving and supported us with our analytical methods.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
