We are happy to share that the first research collaboration fund between Imperial and Science Tokyo is now open to applications until 31 July 2026. There are also several emerging Japan-UK funding opportunities available to support long-term research partnerships.<\/p>\n

Institute of Science Tokyo-Imperial Collaboration Fund\u00a02026\/27<\/a><\/h3>\n

This new fund<\/a>\u00a0aims to support\u00a0new,\u00a0early-stage\u00a0collaboration between academics and researchers at\u00a0Imperial and Institute of Science Tokyo.\u00a0Researchers from both\u00a0universities\u00a0are eligible to apply.<\/p>\n

This is an open call,\u00a0and\u00a0research proposals aligned with\u00a0the themes under\u00a0Imperial’s School of Convergence Science\u00a0and Science Tokyo\u2019s Visionary Initiatives are\u00a0particularly\u00a0encouraged\u00a0to apply.<\/p>\n

Other Japan-UK\u00a0Funding\u00a0Opportunities<\/h3>\n

(1) <\/strong>Expression of interest: Japan-UK joint call for collaborations in Advanced Connectivity Technologies<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

This joint call<\/a>\u00a0between EPSRC and NICT aims to encourage\u00a0Japan-UK\u00a0collaborations on advanced connectivity technologies. Research related to integration of AI in digital networks, non-terrestrial\u00a0networks,\u00a0and advanced optical and photonics\u00a0are encouraged to apply.<\/p>\n

UK applicants must be based at a UK research\u00a0organisation\u00a0eligible for EPSRC funding. Japanese applicants must be eligible for NICT funding.<\/p>\n

Deadline to apply: 8 September 2026,\u00a016:00 (BST)<\/p>\n

(2)\u00a0<\/strong>Japan Science and Technology Agency:\u00a0Changes\u00a0to\u00a0CREST program\u00a0funding\u00a0eligibility for\u00a0overseas\u00a0collaborators<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) recently announced\u00a0an\u00a0increased\u00a0focus on\u00a0internationalisation, encouraging\u00a0research\u00a0collaborations\u00a0between Japanese and overseas institutions.\u00a0As of\u00a0April 2026,\u00a0overseas collaborators\u00a0applying\u00a0as\u00a0Co-Principal\u00a0Investigators\u00a0to the CREST program\u00a0may also be considered for funding\u00a0from JST\u00a0with suitable justification.<\/p>\n
