{"id":7447,"date":"2026-06-30T11:06:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-30T11:06:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/early-career-researcher-noticeboard\/?p=7447"},"modified":"2026-06-30T11:06:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T11:06:13","slug":"ref-2029-what-you-need-to-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/early-career-researcher-noticeboard\/2026\/06\/30\/ref-2029-what-you-need-to-know\/","title":{"rendered":"REF 2029: What you need to know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>REF 2029: what you need to know\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>Code of Practice\u00a0<\/u><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/research-and-innovation\/about-imperial-research\/ref\/code-of-practice\/\">Imperial\u2019s REF 2029 Code of Practice<\/a>\u00a0has been\u00a0submitted\u00a0to Research England and is now\u00a0available\u00a0for staff\u00a0to view.\u00a0The\u00a0Code of Practice is our REF governance framework which ensures that decisions are being made fairly and transparently and that our submission reflects the breadth and excellence of our research.<\/p>\n<p><u>Training and resources<\/u><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/research-and-innovation\/about-imperial-research\/ref\/training-resources-and-faqs\/\">Training and resources<\/a>\u00a0are available to all staff to support\u00a0REF\u00a0preparations, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/share.eu.articulate.com\/aGB7DrAkMcL9AKBwKYuZ-#\/\">REF 2029 Essentials training<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/research-and-innovation\/about-imperial-research\/ref\/training-resources-and-faqs\/engagement-and-impact\/\">Engagement and Impact resources<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/research-and-innovation\/about-imperial-research\/ref\/training-resources-and-faqs\/frequently-asked-questions-faqs\/\">Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All\u00a0staff\u00a0should\u00a0also make sure their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/staff\/new-staff\/essentials\/\">Imperial Essentials<\/a>\u00a0are up to date.<\/p>\n<p><u>Volume measure and REF independence<\/u><\/p>\n<p>The volume measure is a calculation of staff contracts which\u00a0determines\u00a0the size of Imperial&#8217;s submission to REF 2029.\u00a0You can find more detail about the volume measure, how\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0calculated, and which contracts are included in\u00a0our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/research-and-innovation\/about-imperial-research\/ref\/training-resources-and-faqs\/frequently-asked-questions-faqs\/\">FAQs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0are required to\u00a0have a process for\u00a0determining\u00a0whether contracts in the Research job family at grades Research Associate, Research Fellow and Advanced Research Fellow, meet the REF\u00a0criteria for \u2018research independence\u2019.\u00a0Staff who hold a contract at these grades will receive an email\u00a0notifying them\u00a0about whether their contract will be included in the volume measure.<\/p>\n<p>Decisions on whether a contract is included in the volume measure are for REF purposes only and have no relation to an individual\u2019s career progression at Imperial.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>REF 2029: what you need to know\u00a0 Code of Practice\u00a0 Imperial\u2019s REF 2029 Code of Practice\u00a0has been\u00a0submitted\u00a0to Research England and is now\u00a0available\u00a0for staff\u00a0to view.\u00a0The\u00a0Code of Practice is our REF governance framework which ensures that decisions are being made fairly and transparently and that our submission reflects the breadth and excellence of our research.
