{"id":26,"date":"2019-01-24T11:09:31","date_gmt":"2019-01-24T11:09:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/education-research\/?p=26"},"modified":"2022-11-01T10:14:25","modified_gmt":"2022-11-01T10:14:25","slug":"keeping-it-real-a-search-for-efficacy-and-authenticity-across-paradigms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/education-research\/2019\/01\/24\/keeping-it-real-a-search-for-efficacy-and-authenticity-across-paradigms\/","title":{"rendered":"Keeping it real: a search for efficacy and authenticity across paradigms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday 16 January an enthusiastic audience gathered for the inaugural lecture of Professor Martyn Kingsbury, Imperial\u2019s first Professor of Higher Education, Head of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/staff\/educational-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Educational Development Unit<\/a> (EDU) and Director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/education-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centre for Higher Education Research and Scholarship<\/a> (CHERS).<\/p>\n<p>Martyn\u2019s autobiographical lecture focused on his journey from school in rural Devon to studying Applied Biology at the University of Bristol and gaining industrial experience in both forensic science and veterinary diagnostic biochemistry. He then completed a PhD at the University of Bath on the cardiovascular effects of atenolol and nitrendipine. After a post-doc position at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan, Martyn moved to Imperial College London by way of St Mary\u2019s Hospital.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" class=\"wp-image-30 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/education-research\/files\/2019\/01\/160119-Martin_Kingsbury-017-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Martyn Kingsbury presenting on stage\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><br \/>Photography by Fergus Burnett<br \/>fergusburnett.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Drawing on the parallels between efficacy and authenticity in pharmacology and education, Martyn told the audience about his transition from scientist to educationalist through participation in the CASLAT (Certificate of Advanced Study in Learning and Teaching) programme, which eventually lead to his appointment as Head of the EDU in January 2011.
