Thank you for talking with us Charlotte! \u2b50\ufe0f<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"262\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-258 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/ic-wip\/files\/2026\/03\/Screenshot-2026-03-03-at-7.10.58-pm-262x300.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is your favourite area in Physics?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"a_GcMg\">I say something different every time someone asks, but I think maybe something\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">fundamental<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">, I really enjoy seeing beyond <\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">standard model<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\"> physics. The data analysis and seeing it in experiments, there are so many phenomena beyond what the standard model predicts, for example<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\"> charged particle <\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">asymmetry<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\"> and its really cool to see it in experiments and try to fill in the gaps, I think that\u2019s really interesting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg\">What was your path into Physics?<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"a_GcMg\">When I was about 14 in China, I would read the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">Three Body Problem<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\"> beneath my table in Mandarin, and I thought that it was all so cool. Then later, because I was doing well in secondary school, I was thinking that I should pick something hard, something\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">challenging<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">. I was deciding between maths, engineering and physics, but then it eventually still led me back to physics because it kind of fuels your curiosity, always thinking \u2018why\u2019- and then whenever you ask why there&#8217;s always a physics explanation. And it sounds cool to tell people that I study Physics- didn&#8217;t know what I set myself up for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg\">Do you know what you want to do in the future?<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"a_GcMg\">I\u2019m not sure, I\u2019m always changing my mind, but I think third year is the time when you should be sure. I have been looking into doing a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">PhD<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\"> because I feel like I would really enjoy it. But I\u2019ve been talking to my personal tutor, and he said are you sure you\u2019re ready for it? You\u2019re going to be lying on the <\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">ground thinking that you want to quit. But at the same time that\u2019s what people told me before I did this degree at Imperial so if I can make it <\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">through this then maybe it\u2019s a challenge worth taking on. I could also go into\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">corporate<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">; I think it\u2019s a balance between what you would enjoy and what makes money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Talk to us about your involvement in IPRL.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I<span class=\"a_GcMg\">\u00a0joined\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">Imperial Planetary Robotics Lab<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\"> in my second year, that was when the research branch was first formed, last year we did a very holistic review on<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">\u00a0lunar water extraction<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\"> application. It was very interesting to learn something that\u2019s outside of your regular curriculum, also you meet more people and get to socialise with people who are interested in the same thing. Because it was the research branch\u2019s first year, things were kind of falling apart and so the person who ran it at the time asked me to take the lead (a week before term started). So I whipped out three research projects and then had to make a presentation in front of 200 people at Space Society and now I have three nice teams. Recently I submitted abstracts to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">UK SEDS<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">, which is a space exploration conference. Overall, I feel it is a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">reassuring and safe <\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">research space and you get to learn so many cool things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg\">Do you have any advice for younger students?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"a_GcMg\">Don\u2019t be afraid to make <\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">mistakes<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">, I\u2019ve made a lot of mistakes- because in the grand scheme of things, the decisions you make now weigh so little and the mistakes you make <\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">help you learn\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">so much, which will make you better in the future. There were so many times in first and second year where I thought my life was going to crumble over this but you&#8217;ve just got to live past it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg\">Do you have any hobbies outside of Physics?<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"a_GcMg\">I like to try to reconnect with <\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">nature<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">, trying on new\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">sports<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">, making new\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">friends<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">. During breaks I enjoy going on trips and doing some sports, I\u2019ve tried snowboarding, bouldering and I\u2019ve been boating quite a lot. To go on runs and go to the gym, it gives you a certain peace of mind, you enter a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">flow state<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg\">, and it relieves stress.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are back for Week 3 of\u00a0#WNBiPonWednesdays\u00a0!
