In response to <\/span>the <\/span>2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (<\/span>COP26<\/span>)<\/span> and the environmental crisis, we, a few of PhD students from <\/span><\/span>Centre for Environmental Policy<\/span><\/span><\/a> (CEP)<\/span>, <\/span><\/span>Dyson School of Design Engineering<\/span><\/span><\/a> (Dyson)<\/span> and <\/span><\/span>Imperial Business School<\/span><\/span><\/a> (ICBS)<\/span>, initiated <\/span>the <\/span>event, <\/span><\/span>“Beauty of a More Colourful World”<\/span><\/span><\/a>. <\/span>The event brought together <\/span>12<\/span> PhD students from 6 departments to showcase how their research ties into addressing environmental problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The event took place on Wednesday 1<\/span><\/span>st <\/span><\/span>of December<\/span> 2021<\/span> and was a <\/span>cross-department<\/span>al<\/span> initiative, aiming to <\/span>create a unique opportunity to gather <\/span>researchers and<\/span> wider college community<\/span> with shared interest<\/span>s<\/span> in conservation, biodiversity, <\/span>sustainability, and climate change & the environment more broadly.<\/span> The <\/span>12 <\/span>PhD student presenters ran 9 stalls with different topics in the Queen\u2019s Tower Room<\/span>s<\/span>. <\/span>The detailed topics can be found in the map below.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A general public<\/span> audience<\/span> from<\/span> across Imperial were invited to this event<\/span>.<\/span> They <\/span>were encouraged to learn <\/span>about <\/span>all 9 different projects <\/span>and could take part in quizzes with questions spanning each stall to demonstrate their newfound knowledge and win prizes<\/span>. It was a fun and immersive event which saw high turnout<\/span>, with attendees enjoying the stalls, <\/span>snacks, drinks and<\/span>, of course,<\/span> prizes<\/span>!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As the organizers initiating this event, we (<\/span>Yurong Yu<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Neel Le Penru<\/span><\/a>), realized the complexity of environmental problems requires interdisciplinary collaboration, so interdepartmental communication among researchers is critical. More importantly, it is crucial for junior researchers to learn how to communicate their research to a lay audience, to achieve a great impact. After some discussion, we came up with the idea of inviting interactive and entertaining presentations from multiple departments, using the formats of demos, prototypes, installations, games,\u00a0 and so on, to inspire members of our Imperial community.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yurong and Yuruo played a video of training students to plant coral reef in Hainan, China, as well as a PowerPoint presentation to explain the whole project, receiving great feedback from the audience. This project is part of Yurong\u2019s PhD research of how to increase public awareness of conservation, which can further lead to a fundamental behaviour change.<\/span><\/p>\n

Neel\u2019s presentation <\/span>featured\u00a0 a<\/span> \u2018listening station\u2019 <\/span>with <\/span>sounds<\/span> and images<\/span> from the <\/span>Bornean<\/span> rainforest.\u00a0 <\/span>His <\/span>research <\/span>group\u00a0 <\/span>explore<\/span> EcoAcoustic<\/span> Monitoring, which involves listening to the natural environment’s soundscape to infer metrics of ecosystem health. They designed and deployed a network of low-cost, open-source field recorders to <\/span>passively and continuously monitor various environments<\/span>. They then analysed this data with techniques including machine learning (for predicting aspects of ecosystem health) and, more recently, spatial audio analysis (for locating sounds). As part of the Stability of Altered Forest Ecosystems (SAFE) project, they are specifically using <\/span>EcoAcoustic<\/span> Monitoring to explore how human pressures are impacting <\/span>globally vital<\/span> rainforest ecosystems by analysing soundscapes across a habitat <\/span>degredation<\/span> gradient from primary rainforest to oil palm plantations in Malaysian Borneo.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Francesca <\/span>Lugaresi<\/span><\/span><\/a> and her colleagues <\/span>from Department of <\/span>Mechanical Engineering are part of <\/span><\/span>Imperial <\/span>Hazelab<\/span><\/span><\/a>, <\/span>the research group <\/span>studying<\/span> heat transfer, <\/span>combustion<\/span> and fire science. <\/span>Francesca<\/span>\u2019s research is on<\/span> improv<\/span>ing<\/span> the <\/span>fa\u00e7ade of a <\/span>building, to increase its sustainability performance and reduce energy use.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Matilde <\/span>Faralli<\/span><\/span><\/a> is a second-year PhD student from <\/span>Department of Finance<\/span>, ICBS<\/span>. Her research is about preserving financial stability. To achieve this, a <\/span>key <\/span>part is to understand how to correctly <\/span>assess and price climate-related risks.\u202f Her work studies<\/span>:<\/span> how to incorporate natural hazards such as wildfires, flooding, etc. into expectations and forecasts; how climate risks shape public perception of future natural disasters and the associated economic damages;<\/span> and,<\/span> how to forecast adjustments following climate events.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The event received great feedback from our audience. <\/span><\/span>Professor Mark <\/span>Burgman<\/span><\/span><\/a>, the <\/span>Director <\/span>of CEP commented, \u201cIt is a very well-organized event, with impressive attendance across Imperial. I enjoyed these presentations very much.\u201d <\/span><\/span>Kevin Sum<\/span><\/span><\/a>, our volunteer journalist, interviewed a few attendees <\/span>on the <\/span>day<\/span>, and heard <\/span>from\u00a0<\/span> Xilan<\/span>, a<\/span>n<\/span> MSc<\/span> student from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering,\u00a0 that <\/span>the <\/span>event made her realize there are so many disciplines at Imperial <\/span>that <\/span>are environment<\/span>–<\/span>related, and <\/span>that <\/span>they are all so fun!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Many presenters found the interaction with <\/span>the <\/span>audience was beyond their expectations too. <\/span><\/span>Sander <\/span>Valk<\/span><\/span><\/a> (Dyson) found it pleasant that so many students and faculty members are interested in learning his climate change related card game. <\/span><\/span>Victoria Hoare<\/span><\/span><\/a> (CEP), <\/span><\/span>Riqi<\/span> Zhang<\/span><\/span><\/a> (CEP), <\/span><\/span>Karina <\/span>Corada<\/span> Perez<\/span><\/span><\/a> (CEP), <\/span><\/span>Erika <\/span>Piroli<\/span><\/span><\/a> (CEP) and <\/span><\/span>Ric Zhang<\/span><\/span><\/a> (Dyson) all found the format of this event very engaging. The quiz competition \u201cnudged\u201d <\/span>the <\/span>audience to approach presenters and ask more questions about their research. Sander said, \u201cI loved the format of the event!\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
