So as we settle into 2020, we asked some key people across IGHI about the developments they\u2019d like to see in healthcare.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2038\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/ighi\/files\/2019\/12\/Melanie-Leis.jpg\" alt=\"Melanie Leis\" \/>Improving our use of data<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cMy hope for healthcare in 2020 is that we find more, and better ways of using data and analytics to protect and improve outcomes for patients. Whether this is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/9\/12\/e031637\">improving data sharing between hospitals<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2019\/07\/06\/hospitals-issued-urgent-cyber-warning-over-repeat-wannacry-threat-report\/#143ca8c56dbf\">enhancing our systems\u2019 cybersecurity<\/a>\u00a0or simply\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.org.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/2019-05\/IFI%20R6%20Imperial%20Final%20report_1.pdf\">better use of datasets that are already there<\/a>. I feel incredibly lucky to be part of an Institute that is working across the healthcare spectrum to influence the discourse and make this a reality. Here\u2019s to a data-driven 2020!\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Melanie Leis<br \/>\n<\/strong>Director &#8211; Big Data and Analytical Unit (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/centre-for-health-policy\/our-work\/e-health-and-analytics\/big-data-and-analytical-unit-bdau\/\">BDAU<\/a>)<\/h5>\n<h2><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2039\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/ighi\/files\/2019\/12\/Bryony-portrait-June-2016-v2-cropped-226x300.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Bryony Franklin\" \/>Give patients greater access to their records<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cMy hope is for patients to have greater access to their electronic health records, particularly relating to medication. The last decade has seen significant steps forward in involving patients in their own healthcare, \u00a0which could lead to safer care and better health outcomes. With increasing use of electronic systems, the potential is there for patients both to view their records and suggest amendments and clarifications. However, particularly in hospitals, electronic prescribing systems can actually create barriers to patient access compared with paper drug charts. So my hope is that we reverse this trend and allow hospital patients to be true partners in their care.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Professor Bryony Dean Franklin<\/strong><br \/>\nTheme 4 Lead, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/patient-safety-translational-research-centre\/\">NIHR Imperial Patient Safety Translational Research Centre<\/a><\/h5>\n<h2><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"288\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2041\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/ighi\/files\/2019\/12\/Ferdinando-Rodriguez-y-Baena-288x300.jpg\" alt=\"Ferdinando Rodriguez y Baena\" \/>Taking risks in medical innovation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018Valley of Death\u2019 in innovation, the challenging phase between having an idea and turning it into a successful product or system, can sink technology on the cusp of real clinical impact. This remains an open challenge for innovations in medical technology. For 2020, I hope for a more streamlined regulatory framework and more appetite for high-risk ventures that promise to solve some of the big challenges facing society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany technological breakthroughs never reach their translational potential due to a myriad of barriers. A faster certification route and broader access to appropriate funds to boost commercialisation would therefore go a long way in supporting the UK\u2019s long-term healthcare needs. 2020 promises big changes and I am excited to see what it brings.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Professor Ferdinando Rodriguez y Baena<br \/>\n<\/strong>Interim Co-Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/hamlyn-centre\/\">Hamlyn Centre<\/a><\/h5>\n<h2><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2037 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/ighi\/files\/2019\/12\/NABARRO-David-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"David Nabarro\" \/>Responding to the needs of people<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cMy hope is that \u2013 through Universal Health Coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals \u2013 there continues to be an increased focus everywhere on the well-being and resilience of individuals and households in ways that respond to their needs and aspirations. In particular, exploring social and economic causes of mental and physical ill-health. Doing so engages multiple actors able to influence health, in inclusive ways, as \u2018living systems\u2019. It takes advantage of the opportunities offered by innovative technologies and ways of connecting.\u201c<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Dr David Nabarro<br \/>\n<\/strong>Co-Director of IGHI<\/h5>\n<h2><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2042\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/ighi\/files\/2019\/12\/LAWRANCE_-Emma-15.07.2019-5-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Emma Lawrance\" \/>A greater understanding of young people\u2019s mental health<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI hope that we can gain a more holistic understanding of young people&#8217;s mental health and use this to create better services and communities of support. By working together, researchers and charities can learn from young people accessing non-traditional mental health services. We can hear directly from the voices of young people about the issues they face, and learn what works to support their mental health.
