{"id":631,"date":"2016-09-09T14:42:01","date_gmt":"2016-09-09T14:42:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imperialighi.wordpress.com\/?p=631"},"modified":"2019-03-29T10:51:49","modified_gmt":"2019-03-29T10:51:49","slug":"a-letter-tomy-buddy-sami-who-killed-himself-a-year-ago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/ighi\/2016\/09\/09\/a-letter-tomy-buddy-sami-who-killed-himself-a-year-ago\/","title":{"rendered":"A letter to\u2026my buddy Sami*, who killed himself a year ago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The letter you always wanted to write&#8230;..<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Anon<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/wspd.org.au\/wp-content\/themes\/WSPD\/images\/logo-update.png\" alt=\"\" \/>The day you killed yourself was a Wednesday and when my husband called to tell me I was at work.\u00a0 I felt dizzy in the sunny and overheated hallway in the hospital where I work.\u00a0 I sat down and cried right there, in the hallway on a radiator.\u00a0 And I didn\u2019t care that doctors, patients and colleagues were walking past me, looking away, probably feeling bad for me, but feeling uncomfortable and not knowing how to help.<\/p>\n<p>It couldn\u2019t possibly have been you, I thought as I sat there.\u00a0 You were so funny, so bubbly, so warm.\u00a0 Your children, your wife, a thousand people whose hearts you\u2019ve warmed; you have left such immense wreckage in your wake.\u00a0 I know a bit about that wreckage.\u00a0 Mine is not the same as yours, but when my father killed himself, he left a mess behind to clean up too.<\/p>\n<p>You were 1 of the most daunting statistics: 1 of the 4,630 British men under 50 who killed themselves over the year<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>.\u00a0 In health policy we call suicides preventable deaths.<\/p>\n<p>I could categorise you as having had \u201ctreatment resistant depression,\u201d but as a friend looking back trying to make sense of it, I think maybe you were a man without hope in the face of what you saw were unacceptable difficulties and failures.\u00a0 Where you felt personal shortcomings, your loved ones only saw external forces piling pressure on you.\u00a0 If only you could have seen how so many of these difficulties were beyond your control \u2013 events you could not have avoided, no matter what.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I should have known you were right in the target zone; after all, suicide, not cancer or heart disease is the top killer of adult men under 55.\u00a0 The top killer.\u00a0 I\u2019ll bet you didn\u2019t even know that.\u00a0 Not many people do.\u00a0 Or that the highest risk age for suicide for all people is for men between 45 and 49.\u00a0 That was you too.\u00a0 I\u2019ll bet you didn\u2019t even know how many men were in deep despair the same week as you.\u00a0 So many of them have made it out.\u00a0 Why not you?\u00a0 What could we have all done differently for you?\u00a0 What could you have done differently for yourself? \u00a0You tried more than many men would have, so your wife told me after the funeral.<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t help but try and pick apart all of the reasons why the help you received was, in the end, too little, too late.\u00a0 What beliefs did you have about yourself, the future and the world?\u00a0 How many decades had they been digging away at you?<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 273px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/e\/e0\/Dancing_after_Masters_of_Lindy_Hop_and_Tap_2009_07.jpg\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stock photography<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Remember the last time we swung each other around a dancefloor?\u00a0 We laughed, hugged and smiled for hours.\u00a0 I wonder now how much of that was an act.<\/p>\n<p>I want you to know that I laughed at your funeral.\u00a0 The music was hilariously perfect; I owed it to you to behave as you would have wanted in that moment; to let go of your sadness and just be myself.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote to your wife after the funeral.\u00a0 I told her that I am living proof that the children of suicide victims can be ok.\u00a0 She told me it meant a lot to her.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if that\u2019s true or not, but I hope it is.<\/p>\n<p>I haven\u2019t told her what happens next.\u00a0 Next is the part where your suicide\u2019s youngest victims \u2013 your children &#8211; will grow up to eventually be ok with not knowing why dad killed himself, and why no one could help.<\/p>\n<p>The part that happens next is also the part where your children start realising we were asking the wrong questions; like \u201cwhy your family didn\u2019t mean enough to you to stay around.\u201d\u00a0 We start realising your belief was firmly the opposite: that we would be much better off without you.<\/p>\n<p>What have I done since then?\u00a0 I\u2019ve been telling every man who will listen that men must make it ok for each other to talk about their difficulties and accept help.\u00a0 I\u2019m learning how to encourage the adult men in my life by using tips for friends from the website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecalmzone.net\/help\/get-help\/\">CALM<\/a>\u00a0which was developed to help men talk about their problems.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if you\u2019re reading this now and thinking of a man you could have helped.\u00a0 I wonder if there will be a man whom you could help today?<\/p>\n<p>By anonymous Research Fellow, Institute of Global Health Innovation, Imperial College London<\/p>\n<p>*Not his real name<\/p>\n<p><strong>CALM the Campaign Against Living Miserably<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How can I help my male friend or family member?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s always very difficult\u00a0if\u00a0you\u2019re worried\u00a0that\u00a0someone close to you is at risk of suicide.
