Investments in many different sectors \u2013 including education, water and sanitation, transportation, and health \u2013 can all reap social and economic benefits. This report, \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/media\/imperial-college\/institute-of-global-health-innovation\/Investing_in_Health_Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Investing in health: The economic case\u2019,<\/a> which is to be discussed at today\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/global-health-innovation\/global-engagement\/wish-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Innovation Summit for Health<\/a>\u00a0(WISH) focuses specifically on the health sector. It presents compelling evidence of the value of scaling-up health investments. The economic case for increasing these investments in health has never been stronger.<\/p>\n<p>Having made progress in reducing maternal and child mortality, and deaths from infectious diseases, it is essential that policymakers do not become complacent. These gains will be quickly reversed without sustained health investments. Scaled-up investments will be needed to tackle the emerging non-communicable disease (NCD)\u00a0burden and to achieve universal health coverage (UHC).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Report focus <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/imperialighi.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/11\/stethoscope-to-measure-blood-pressure_zkbaqsd_.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-805\" src=\"https:\/\/imperialighi.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/11\/stethoscope-to-measure-blood-pressure_zkbaqsd_.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Stethoscope to measure blood pressure\" \/><\/a>This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/media\/imperial-college\/institute-of-global-health-innovation\/Investing_in_Health_Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a> presents compelling evidence of the value of scaling-up health investments, addressing three key questions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What is the economic rationale for investing in health?<\/li>\n<li>What is the best way to finance health?<\/li>\n<li>Which interventions should be prioritised?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Report insights <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/media\/imperial-college\/institute-of-global-health-innovation\/Investing_in_Health_Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a> insights are organised around answers to the above three key questions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Investing in health is an investment in economic prosperity through multiple pathways:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Education \u2013 well-nourished children are more likely to go to school and to further their education, which is linked to higher earnings in adulthood.<\/li>\n<li>Productivity \u2013 healthy people work harder and better, and are less likely to take days off.<\/li>\n<li>Investment \u2013 people are more likely to save money when they expect to live longer and businesses are more likely to invest in countries with healthier populations. \u2022 Resources \u2013 access to natural resources is opened up when endemic diseases such as malaria are tackled.<\/li>\n<li>Demographics \u2013 when mortality rates fall, women have fewer children, which temporarily increases the ratio of working-age people to their dependents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Without public financing there will be individuals who cannot afford the care they need, resulting in sickness, and potential mortality and financial ruin. This is a devastating choice that pushes 150 million people into poverty every year.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Investing in interventions that are targeted to local needs is the fastest and most effective way to reduce mortality. Dramatic health improvements are possible through scaling-up best buys, even when social and economic conditions are poor.
