In celebration of\u00a0Black History\u00a0Month, medical student\u00a0Yasmin\u00a0Adelekan-Kamara shares her story on\u00a0how she\u00a0pursued her passion\u00a0for\u00a0medicine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

I still vividly remember\u00a0the moment\u00a0I decided to apply to medical school. It was not a decision\u00a0that was\u00a0easy for me, and this\u00a0worried me having seen how natural it was for some of my peers to pursue medicine. Despite my genuine interest and passion there was always a doubt in my\u00a0mind that I could never be the\u00a0\u2018ideal\u2019 medical student I thought a university like Imperial wanted.<\/p>\n

Rethinking medical school<\/h2>\n

Whilst I loved medicine, I also had a\u00a0love for\u00a0other vocations; journalism\u00a0and architecture\u00a0especially.\u00a0This caused a\u00a0great\u00a0internal\u00a0conflict for me. I\u00a0believed\u00a0to be the\u00a0\u2018ideal\u2019\u00a0medical student,\u00a0you had to\u00a0initially\u00a0be\u00a0solely devoted\u00a0to and have an unwavering commitment to\u00a0medicine.\u00a0Did the fact that I was\u00a0questioning my decision mean\u00a0I was not dedicated enough?<\/p>\n

Applying myself<\/h2>\n

The actual application process was such a\u00a0whirlwind. I was fortunate enough to have\u00a0received\u00a0a few offers in late January and therefore made my\u00a0firm and insurance\u00a0choices\u00a0quite early on. I think\u00a0it’s\u00a0important to remain grounded and remind yourself why all the effort you\u2019re putting in \u2013 whether\u00a0that be\u00a0for\u00a0entrance tests\u00a0or\u00a0interviews \u2013 will\u00a0be worth it. I had loads of support from my friends and family which gave me a sense of reassurance, however I still feel that the best support and motivation comes from within.\u00a0Don\u2019t compare your application to anyone else\u2019s \u2013 being unique is what will make you stand out and to be unique you can only be yourself!<\/p>\n

Results day was bittersweet for me;\u00a0I was overjoyed by the fact that all my hard work had paid off and a dream of mine would be coming true.\u00a0 At the same time, I couldn\u2019t help but wonder if I\u2019d made the right decision\u00a0\u2013 was\u00a0making such a big commitment to medicine at 18\u00a0right the\u00a0choice\u00a0for me?\u00a0I felt as if I was signing my adolescent years away in hopes of someday becoming a\u00a0doctor. Very dramatic, I know!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

There is no \u2018ideal\u2019<\/h2>\n

After my first year at Imperial, I\u2019ve realised this is simply not the case.\u00a0 In an\u00a0introductory\u00a0talk\u00a0during fresher\u2019s week,\u00a0we\u00a0were told that each of us were\u00a0unique and individually chosen to be part of the\u00a0first-year\u00a0cohort, and it\u00a0would not be the same without\u00a0us.\u00a0 This may seem obvious, but it wasn\u2019t to me at the time. Now, retrospectively speaking, I can appreciate this so much more. It\u2019s the distinctive combination of qualities that you have that will make you a good doctor. There is no \u2018ideal\u2019.<\/p>\n

Smooth transition<\/h2>\n

As someone who grew up in London but did their A-Levels in Cardiff, coming back to\u00a0London was nostalgic yet exciting.\u00a0\u00a0Moving\u00a0in day was a blur; I seem to only recall going to the\u00a0mingle that evening.\u00a0However\u00a0the\u00a0friendly atmosphere of\u00a0campus\u00a0really eased the process of\u202fsettling\u00a0in,\u00a0and\u00a0with the support of\u00a0Imperial College School of Medicine Students’ Union<\/a>\u00a0I\u00a0felt\u00a0at home\u00a0in no time.<\/p>\n

Black and minority ethnic\u00a0(BME)\u00a0students make up a third of\u00a0the intake to\u00a0UK medical schools, however\u00a0only 3.3% identify as black<\/a>.\u00a0As a black student,\u00a0I knew I would be a minority\u00a0at medical school.\u00a0Joining\u00a0the\u00a0Afro Caribbean Society<\/a>\u00a0was a highlight of my first year. I\u2019ve\u00a0met some\u00a0amazing people that I could relate to and had new, enriching experiences with them. I know many prospective applicants may worry about fitting in because of their background, but I can reassure\u00a0you:\u00a0\u00a0It doesn\u2019t matter\u00a0who\u00a0you are or where you\u2019re from,\u00a0Imperial is a very welcoming place.<\/p>\n

London is\u00a0extremely culturally diverse\u00a0\u2013\u00a0a \u2018melting pot\u2019 as they call it. You have opportunities to embrace different cultures in different parts of the city and experience things you may not have before.\u00a0Looking back on first year, it was the best year of my life so far. I\u2019ve learnt fascinating concepts and taken on more information than I ever\u00a0imagined\u00a0possible in such a short period of time. I\u2019ve made friends who I feel like I\u2019ve known for ages, well at least not a mere nine months.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Realising potential<\/h2>\n

Naturally with the highs come lows,\u00a0and it\u2019s all too easy to feel as if you\u2019re not doing enough\u00a0or you aren\u2019t capable.\u00a0It\u2019s important to remember you wouldn\u2019t be where you were if you did not have the potential that was recognised in you.\u00a0 I\u2019ve still followed my\u00a0interests outside\u00a0of medicine in architecture and design, that I once thought would not be possible at medical school.\u00a0Interestingly, my passion for medicine has grown with time and continues to as I learn more and experience new things such as anatomy.<\/p>\n

The one thing I want you to take away from this is that you shouldn\u2019t let fear hold you back. Being apprehensive or uncertain is not uncommon, but this shouldn\u2019t deter you from following your passions. I once read somewhere that change only happens outside of your comfort zone\u00a0\u2013\u00a0I definitely believe\u00a0this\u00a0is true.<\/p>\n
