Air pollution is linked to 43,000\u202f deaths each year in the UK.\u202f\u202fThe World Health Organization and the UK Government recognise that air pollution is the largest environmental threat to our health. To mark Clean Air Day, we\u2019re spotlighting Dr Ian (Gang) Chen and Dr Kayla Schulte from Imperial\u2019s Environmental Research Group who are leading the charge in the fight against air pollution.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr Ian (Gang) Chen<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

As a kid growing up in China, I always thought the haze was just another humid day with fog. Only after watching the Chinese-made documentary, <\/span>Under the Dome <\/span><\/i><\/a>in 2015<\/span>, did I realise how polluted our air was. I was shocked and determined to do something about it. To begin my research journey in air pollution, I pursued a two-year MPhil program at the University of Toronto. There, I focused on developing a low-cost sensor to detect soot particles in developing countries. After that, I became interested in identifying and quantifying sources of air pollutants for my PhD studies at ETH Zurich, since it\u2019s the most straightforward way to target emission sources and mitigate air pollution. My research has focused on this topic ever since. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our team (Aerosol Science)<\/a> at Imperial\u2019s Environmental Research Group<\/a> maintain two air quality supersites in London, where we use the latest technology to continuously monitor pollution. One site is located near Baker Street, central London, a traffic station, while the other is an urban background site located in Honor Oak Park in south London. On Clean Air Day 2023, we launched a <\/span>particulate matter (PM) dashboard<\/span><\/a> which shows the hourly chemical composition <\/span>of the solid particles and liquid droplets found in our air<\/span>. <\/span>\u00a0Making this data open-access and interactive is crucial for public understanding of the air we breathe. The organic mass in PM often contains millions of compounds and my research focuses on identifying and quantifying its sources. In the coming years, we aim to provide near real-time source information for PM on this dashboard, so that both the public and policymakers can understand where the pollution is coming from. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Kayla Schulte<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always had a great love of the environment. As a child, my father and I used to go on exploratory walks through the woods in upstate New York, where I got to take in all the different sights, smells and textures of the earth. Those memories stayed with me throughout my schooling. Learning about the extent of global pollution, deforestation and climate change terrified me for our planet, and I just wanted to help. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As an undergraduate student, I used to think that the only way I could make a difference was by becoming a scientist to help inform environmental policy. Sadly, I was never great at maths or chemistry. Gradually though, I came to realise that there were many other ways I could help protect the environment, and that communication skills, creativity, and listening were my strengths.<\/span><\/p>\n

I took a job at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency helping communicate research on air, climate and energy. There, I learned about all the different ways information about air pollution levels is being communicated. You can visit websites like <\/span>LondonAir<\/span><\/a>, sign up for notifications or <\/span>download an app<\/span><\/a> You can even buy a sensor or see what other people\u2019s <\/span>sensors are measuring in real-time<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My research is now dedicated to understanding how information about air pollution conditions can be more intuitive and actionable. I help deliver the <\/span>Breathe London project<\/span><\/a>, where our goal is to support interested groups to use real-time air pollution data to take action around improving local air quality, while helping to protect population health on a larger scale. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, to help celebrate Clean Air Day, I\u2019m using my platform as an environmental researcher to <\/span>showcase the brilliant work<\/span><\/a> of individuals and community groups working with Breathe London data to make their communities healthier and less polluted.
