From harnessing the power of national data to leading pioneering research programmes, Cheryl and her colleagues are working to ensure that every baby \u2013 no matter how early or unwell they are born \u2013 has the best possible start in life.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>We believe that every child deserves the best start in life, and we know from decades of research and clinical care that the health of a baby in the first days and weeks after birth can shape their entire future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the UK alone, around 90,000 babies each year are admitted to neonatal units. Some are born too soon. Others arrive on time but need urgent medical care. These fragile early moments matter. They are the beginning of a lifelong journey.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">At Imperial College London, our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/neonatal-data-analysis-unit\/\">Neonatal Medicine Research Group<\/a>\u00a0is one of the largest academic neonatal centres in the UK. We&#8217;re a dynamic team of neonatologists (doctors who specialise in the care of newborn infants), neonatal nurses, statisticians, data scientists, and public involvement experts \u2013 working together to transform care for the smallest, sickest newborns.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Turning data into hope<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">I lead the\u00a0NIHR-funded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neowonder.org.uk\/\">neoWONDER<\/a> programme: <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0305113\">&#8216;Neonatal Whole Population Data linkage to improve lifelong health and wellbeing of preterm babies&#8217;\u00a0<\/a> \u2013 an ambitious project linking data from more than a decade of neonatal care to long-term health, mental health, and education outcomes. By connecting neonatal data from the UK\u00a0National Neonatal Research Database\u00a0with the\u00a0National Pupil Database, we\u2019re taking a life-course approach to uncover what truly helps preterm (born before 37 weeks of pregnancy) and sick babies not just survive \u2013 but thrive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">This project harnesses the strength of population data, combining it with insights from those it affects most \u2013 parents and patients. We work hand-in-hand with families to ensure our questions and answers reflect what matters most to them. One recent <a href=\"https:\/\/bmjmedicine.bmj.com\/content\/2\/1\/e000579\">study<\/a> we led showed that after changes to national guidance, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/news\/249374\/number-extremely-premature-babies-receiving-neonatal\/\">three times as many babies<\/a> born at just 22 weeks received intensive care and survived. Yet the mortality rate remained unchanged. This tells us we have more work to do \u2013 and we are committed to doing it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alongside my research, I serve as\u00a0Honorary Secretary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;rct=j&amp;opi=89978449&amp;url=https:\/\/www.bapm.org\/&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjDhZi758WMAxWlREEAHRZqHCkQFnoECAsQAQ&amp;usg=AOvVaw3vlkCDGH_M5fQkSIwgEkcP\">British Association of Perinatal Medicine<\/a>\u00a0and chair the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bapm.org\/pages\/nano-preterm\">Nano-preterm Specialist Interest Group<\/a>, a national collective focused on improving outcomes for the tiniest and most vulnerable infants.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Pioneering trials, saving lives<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"wp-image-5091 size-thumbnail alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/imperial-medicine\/files\/2025\/04\/Untitled-design-4-150x150.png\" alt=\"Professor Chris Gale\" \/>My colleague, <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.imperial.ac.uk\/christopher.gale\">Professor\u00a0Chris Gale<\/a>, a global leader in neonatal clinical trials, heads two of the largest ever conducted in preterm care. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npeu.ox.ac.uk\/neogastric\">neoGASTRIC<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0WHEAT International\u00a0trials aim to prevent necrotising enterocolitis, a life-threatening bowel condition in newborns. Chris also leads national surveillance of\u00a0perinatal brain injuries\u00a0and monitors the impact of\u00a0SARS-CoV-2\u00a0(the virus that causes COVID-19) in newborns \u2013 work that ensures policy and practice stay responsive to emerging threats.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>The science of growth and development<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another colleague of mine, <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.imperial.ac.uk\/s.uthaya\">Professor\u00a0Sabita Uthaya<\/a>,\u00a0focuses her research on how body composition in newborns \u2013 both preterm and full term \u2013 can shape their long-term health. She leads the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npeu.ox.ac.uk\/base\">BASE<\/a> trial, investigating the use of sodium bicarbonate in very preterm babies with metabolic acidosis (a condition in which the body produces too much acid). Sabita also directs the prestigious\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/school-public-health\/neonatal-update\/neonatal-update-2024\/\">Neonatal Update Conference<\/a>, hosted annually by Imperial, which draws hundreds of clinicians and researchers from around the world to share advances in the science \u2013 and art \u2013 of newborn care. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"wp-image-5092 size-thumbnail alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/imperial-medicine\/files\/2025\/04\/Untitled-design-3-150x150.png\" alt=\"Professor Sabita Uthaya\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">As we look to the future, our goal remains clear: to give every baby the strongest, healthiest start in life.
