Ellie Cawthera explores t<\/span><\/b>he impact of\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Pathways to\u00a0Medicine:<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0Imperial College London\u2019s\u00a0widening participation programme for\u00a0underrepresented\u00a0young people interested in studying medicine.\u00a0It includes activities that provide insight into the medical profession, support medical school\u00a0applications\u00a0and prepare young people for starting university.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The programme is delivered in partnership with the Sutton Trust and\u00a0is\u00a0coordinated by the Outreach Team with support from the School of Medicine, led by\u00a0<\/span>Professor Kevin Murphy<\/span><\/a>\u00a0who helped launch the programme in 2014.\u00a0As an Admissions\u00a0Tutor,\u00a0Kevin\u2019s\u00a0role entails\u00a0assessing applications and conducting interviews with prospective students hoping to take their first step in becoming a doctor.\u00a0Earlier on in this role,\u00a0one thing stood out to him:\u00a0those applying to study medicine at Imperial\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0reflect the diversity of the society medicine seeks to serve.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt struck me that so many of them came from similar backgrounds. There were a lot of\u00a0privately-schooled, upper-middle-class students. While these applicants were often well-prepared, I realised that the whole admissions process\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0set up for students from other backgrounds who faced more obstacles on the path to medicine. It just seemed harder for those from more \u2018normal\u2019 backgrounds. They\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0have the same guidance, the same support.\u201d<\/p>\n

And so,\u00a0in 2014, he launched\u00a0Pathways to Medicine.\u00a0Running for 12 years, the initiative\u00a0supports young people from underrepresented backgrounds in applying\u00a0to\u00a0Medicine\u00a0by offering\u00a0mentorship, work experience\u00a0opportunities\u00a0and academic support.\u00a0Taking place over two years,\u00a0the programme\u00a0includes masterclasses\u00a0and\u00a0exposure to life on campus as well as\u00a0interview support\u00a0for 60 students\u00a0per cohort.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr\u00a0Claire Sweetenham in\u00a0Imperial\u2019s\u00a0Outreach team\u00a0helps run the programme \u2013 coordinating all the activities, the recruitment and\u00a0much\u00a0more\u00a0to make it happen.\u00a0She also plays a key role in evaluating the programme. For her, the impact is clear.\u00a0\u201cFrom our data, we know that\u00a091% of our tracked participants apply to\u00a0top\u00a0universities, compared to 20% of matched students from similar backgrounds.\u00a0We\u00a0also\u00a0see approximately 50% of the cohort apply to Imperial.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Imperial has one of the most competitive medical schools in the UK with only\u00a08-11%\u00a0of\u00a0applicants\u00a0successfully enrolling\u00a0but for those who completed the Pathways programme, the rate is over\u00a014%.\u00a0So, from the\u00a0700 young people have been on the programme\u00a0to date,\u00a050 have joined Imperial to study medicine.\u00a0“I find seeing students who\u2019ve been through Pathways succeed in medicine deeply rewarding,\u201d says Kevin. \u201cWhen\u00a0they\u00a0come up to me later in medical school, I know\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0made a difference. You hear their stories, and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0humbling – the challenges\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0overcome, sometimes without a quiet place to study, sometimes without even a computer to work on.\u00a0They\u2019ve\u00a0fought to be here.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Amber\u2019s story:\u00a0Laying the foundation<\/h2>\n

Amber\u00a0Awan\u00a0is a fifth-year\u00a0medical\u00a0student\u00a0at Imperial\u00a0who took part in\u00a0Pathways to Medicine\u00a0in 2018-2020.\u00a0She is also a Student Ambassador, helping deliver the programme for young people in her shoes.\u00a0\u201cIn 2018, I was told by a teacher that applications to an outreach programme called Pathways to Medicine at Imperial College London had opened. Thinking of my dream to study medicine and the name of the programme, I eagerly applied. I was luckily chosen and\u00a0I think that\u00a0is where my true passion for outreach, and Imperial began. Through Pathways I was able to meet like-minded students to me from a similar background, who also came from schools like mine\u00a0and wanted to study medicine but\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0know where to start.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Through the programme\u00a0Amber\u00a0attended\u00a0taster sessions at Imperial,\u00a0met\u00a0world-class\u00a0professors, and\u00a0got\u00a0to use\u00a0cutting edge\u00a0equipment.\u00a0\u201cI was\u00a0also\u00a0able to shadow doctors and other healthcare professionals on an Oncology placement\u00a0to\u00a0really gauge what being a doctor entails\u00a0practically, and\u00a0was given the privilege of speaking to patients which I may not have had the opportunity to do until much later on otherwise.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For Amber, one of the\u00a0highlights of the programme was the\u00a0week-long\u00a0summer school\u00a0where\u00a0she\u00a0was in a group of\u00a0six\u00a0with a\u00a0Student\u00a0Ambassador as a mentor. \u201cI really got to connect with my cohort. We were able to work\u00a0on a\u00a0problem-based learning\u00a0case, similar to what we do in medical school, do some clinical skills, carry out practicals, and sit in the grass to enjoy lunch by the famous Queen\u2019s Tower\u00a0on campus.\u201d She also had\u00a0valuable\u00a0online mentoring\u00a0to support her through the\u00a0application\u00a0process.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think the programme\u00a0was an amazing stepping stone for when I finally made it\u00a0into\u00a0medical school at Imperial and,\u00a0in a way, it\u00a0lay\u00a0the foundation for me. I hold Pathways\u00a0very close\u00a0to my heart and my mentor from the summer school\u00a0actually inspired\u00a0me to look for the Outreach department when I first got to Imperial! This is my fifth year working as a\u00a0Student\u00a0Ambassador, and I absolutely love giving back to the programme, and helping to inspire the future doctors of tomorrow.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of\u00a0Amber\u2019s\u00a0mentees have\u00a0even made it\u00a0to Imperial\u00a0themselves. \u201cIt\u2019s so amazing having a mini community within the Imperial community!\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shaping journeys<\/h2>\n

For Kevin, Pathways\u00a0to Medicine\u00a0is about more than just teaching skills.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0about inspiring confidence and fostering a sense of belonging.\u00a0Claire agrees.\u00a0\u201cAs well as offering participants valuable insight into studying and working in medicine, the programme fosters a supportive environment where individuals feel valued, empowered to thrive, and able to see themselves as part of the medical community,\u201d she\u00a0says.\u00a0\u201cParticipants tell us that through shared experiences with like-minded peers and meaningful engagement with our medical students and staff, they feel connected not only to the programme itself, but also to one another and to the wider university.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But there is always more to\u00a0do.\u00a0\u201cWe get so many applications to this programme,\u201d she says. In 2025, there were\u00a0over 1000\u00a0applications for just 60 spaces.\u00a0\u201cWe want to support as many young people who need it as possible,\u00a0so\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0been thinking creatively about how we can feasibly do that.\u00a0One\u00a0initiative\u00a0we’ve\u00a0launched\u00a0this year is our\u00a0<\/span>Meet the\u00a0Medic<\/span><\/a>\u00a0webinar\u00a0series\u00a0where young people have the chance to hear from a doctor and ask them questions about their career.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For Amber,\u00a0equal\u00a0access to\u00a0getting\u00a0into medical school\u00a0remains\u00a0an\u00a0issue\u00a0but\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0hopeful for the future thanks to programmes like Pathways to Medicine. \u201cI think programmes like this are really trying to bridge that gap. This was the one programme that really shaped my journey to medical school in a way that I simply cannot put into words for which I will forever be grateful, and I cannot wait to see it continue to grow and flourish!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
