\u201cI love working with academics that are experts in their field and supporting the next generation of some of the brightest minds in\u00a0their\u00a0careers.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I work as the\u00a0MRes\u00a0Programme Coordinator in the\u00a0Department of Chemistry<\/a>, a position I had held for just over a month before we went into lockdown in March.<\/p>\n

I joined Imperial five years ago to do my PhD in the\u00a0Faculty of Medicine<\/a>. I\u2019d become interested in using ambient mass spectrometry imaging in breast cancer research\u00a0and\u00a0Professor\u00a0Zoltan Takats<\/a>\u00a0who pioneered the technique worked at Imperial. When I completed my\u00a0PhD,\u00a0I worked in the faculty for a while as a research\u00a0technician, but\u00a0decided that academia was not for me. However,\u00a0I really liked the\u00a0College and supporting student research, so my new role was perfect.<\/p>\n

The last few months have been difficult; not only was I\u00a0settling into a new job, but I also\u00a0moved house\u00a0during lockdown.\u00a0My line manager has been great about understanding that we all have different circumstances and has been\u00a0really supportive. Me and my colleagues regularly talk to\u00a0each other\u00a0–\u00a0reaching out to your colleagues and supporting each other is the best thing we can all do.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been difficult supporting students in these circumstances too, but we\u2019ve worked\u00a0really hard\u00a0to give as much online support as possible and opened our labs back up for research in June with new COVID-19\u00a0safety\u00a0rules. We regularly listened to\u00a0students\u2019\u00a0feedback and adapted what we were doing in response. Receiving lovely thank you messages from students and hearing about what they are moving onto next has been truly motivating.<\/p>\n

Having worked closely with course directors and our research student manager, we welcomed new students to MRes courses in the autumn. For the first time ever we held a number of webinars for our incoming students, where the Head of Department and the Director of MRes studies spoke to the students, explained how multi-mode teaching works, answered questions, and showed students around our buildings so they knew what to expect when they arrived. The new cohort has just been assigned their research projects and started in January.<\/p>\n
