I previously taught research and academic writing skills to undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of East London. I found it fascinating to shift from teaching students to teaching staff<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0For me, the most satisfying moment is when I see colleagues put what they have learnt into practice<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and can explain the educational rationales and pedagogies that underpin their activities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I am currently also Principal Investigator for the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/education-research\/our-work\/identities-in-education\/sidus\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Supporting the Identity Development of Underrepresented Students\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/education-research\/our-work\/identities-in-education\/sidus\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">(<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/education-research\/our-work\/identities-in-education\/sidus\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">SIDUS<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0which\u00a0aims to promote inclusion and support success for STEMM students from underrepresented groups. Our team conducted 110 interviews with underrepresented students to explore their lived experiences, including their successes, challenges and opportunities. We are currently working with three\u00a0brilliant\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/students\/studentshapers\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">StudentShapers<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">students, to develop pedagogical materials to promote inclusion, educational aspirations and student success. I am very excited to see how our materials can support staff and students!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In the last few months, perhaps the most surreal thing was the publication of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.idealstudent.org\/home\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Ideal Student<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, a book I co-authored with\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/education\/about\/staff\/b-wong.aspx\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr Billy Wong<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0from the University of Reading. I cannot count how many days and nights I tried to produce \u2018words\u2019 on the top of my everyday job. What got me through was determination and my strong belief that we should be transparent in our expectations of students as this can reduce inequalities caused by assumptions and help to better manage different viewpoints. I\u2019m pleased our work has been used in the Dyson School of Design Engineering and the Department of Life Sciences, as well as by colleagues in Australia, China and the US.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Outside of work, I have recently started to play the piano again (after a 20-year break!) and I found this to be rather good for my mental wellbeing. I don\u2019t (and can\u2019t!) think about work when I practise.\u00a0Last but not least, I miss my family in Taiwan and hope I get the chance to visit them soon.
