Ever since, my research focus has been to use nanotechnology for the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases, mainly malaria.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Malaria is a devastating infectious disease that is transmitted by mosquitoes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> It is responsible for the death of about half a million children every year. The current COVID-19 pandemic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> among other factors, has led to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/9789240040496\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">stagnation of the anti-malarial fight<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which highlights the urgent need for innovations distinctively different to our current solutions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I started a long-term project aiming to provide an alternative nanotherapy-mediated vaccination strategy for malaria. We have just <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/full\/10.1021\/acscentsci.1c01368\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">published a big study<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on this, which includes collaborations with several research groups at Imperial and the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00c9cole Polytechnique <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">F\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in Switzerland. The study demonstrates the engineering of nanoparticles that prevent malaria parasites from invading human cells. We also found activity of these nanoparticles against other pathogens, viruses, including SARS-CoV-2.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At Imperial, I have had the privilege of being part of two fantastic and super-friendly research groups, the world-leading biomaterials group of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stevensgroup.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Professor Molly Stevens<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and the cutting-edge malaria lab of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baumlab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Professor Jake Baum<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This has allowed me to contribute to and create various collaborative projects, building bridges between engineering and malaria research, including with partners in malaria-affected areas. I also hugely enjoy working with and guiding master\u2019s and PhD students. Receiving the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/news\/198633\/three-materials-staff-members-awarded-presidents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">President\u2019s Award for Excellence in Education: Outstanding Assistant Supervisor 2020<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> was a great honour and recognition of my efforts.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My past five years at Imperial were funded by a SNSF Early Postdoc Mobility Grant and a Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Wellcome Trust.
