When I was a kid, when people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I responded with cartoonist or marine biologist, quite like my idol Stephen Hillenburg who created SpongeBob SquarePants and was both. I didn\u2019t really know that equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) or diversity and inclusion (D&amp;I) was something that I could work in. However, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I always knew I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">wanted a career that helped people.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> It all clicked for me when I selected Sociology as one of my A-Levels.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">My interest in social sciences grew and I studied criminology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, earning a Master\u2019s degree. My specific focus was eradicating violence against women and victimology. Both of my dissertations were focused on sexual violence on university campuses, and this was something I wanted to pursue career-wise.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">While completing my Master\u2019s degree, I worked part-time at<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">LSE and found out who managed the sexual violence response at the university. This was the first time I heard about the EDI team and what their remit is. It really resonated with me, and I remember telling a friend that the only way I\u2019d continue working at LSE is if I ended up working in the EDI team. I\u2019ve been working in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">this field for almost four years now.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I work as the EDI Coordinator for the\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/mechanical-engineering\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mechanical Engineering<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> (MechEng) and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/earth%20science%20and%20engineering\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Earth Science and Engineering<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> (ESE) departments. This is a new role introduced last year<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and I started working at Imperial in September 2021. In short, I help both departments establish their EDI Committees, deliver their EDI strategies, and provide a link to the central College.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In ESE, there is a newly formed working group to diversify artwork. We have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CG5VyWugSyS\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">a talented student whose artwork<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> will be displayed in the department. In MechEng, I have been part of an EDI seed fund project to produce videos about common mental health problems and signposting to resources. There is a wide range of initiatives I take on, and part of being departmental based rather than central means I have more interactions with students and can advocate for departmental voices. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I\u2019m always happy to meet <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">either online or for a coffee <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> anyone who is interested in working in EDI<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> or would like to find out what I\u2019m up to. EDI shouldn\u2019t have trade secrets.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I feel like we have integrated the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/about\/values\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">College <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Values<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to progress EDI within both the departments I work for. It is impossible to be inclusive without respect, integrity, and excellence. It also requires collaboration and innovation to successfully embed EDI into the culture<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I have quite a few hobbies. Outside of watching too much TV, I like life drawing. I have been attending life drawing sessions for over two years now. It\u2019s my favourite hobby that takes me away from a screen. I\u2019ve been to pretty much every popular life drawing class in London at this point. I also quite like film photography. I\u2019m not particularly good at it, but I enjoy the \u2018life is like a box of chocolates\u2019 nature it has.
