I was supposed to just know what I was doing by myself, and I did not cope with that straight away.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meg went through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/disability-advisory-service\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Disability Advisory Service<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to get her diagnosis.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSince I\u2019ve had that diagnosis, I feel a lot more affirmed in myself. I can understand myself a lot better and for the first time I feel like I&#8217;m working with my brain instead of against it.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Representing the student voice\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meg is the student representative for anyone <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">experiencing a disability while at Imperial, including physical disability, hidden disabilities, chronic illness, neurodiversity and long-term mental health conditions.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt&#8217;s about connecting students with other people going through the same thing and having a sense of community, so you don&#8217;t feel like you&#8217;re the only one trying to get through this. This also includes students who don\u2019t have a formal diagnosis yet.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In her role Meg is keen to improve information on adjustments available for postgraduate students, particularly those in a research degree and is working on this with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/postdoc-fellows-development-centre\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Early Career Researchers Institute<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI do need adjustments in a lab setting. I need to be allowed to wear my earplugs because of loud machines, but I didn\u2019t know this was an option until I had my adjustment meeting.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meg has also been awarded some budget from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/equality\/resources\/seed-fund\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">EDI Seed Fund<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for a campaign called \u2018Things I wish you knew\u2019. Launching during <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/equality\/events\/disability-history-month\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Disability History Month<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the campaign will feature student stories of their experience living with a disability.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI want to ask people what is the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">one thing you wish you could tell people about your disability? For example, one of mine would be: I wish you knew that I&#8217;m not looking at you, but I&#8217;m still engaged in our conversation.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Highlighting disability in the workplace<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meg stresses the importance of Disability History Month in highlighting the struggles of disabled people, particularly in light of this year\u2019s theme of employability and livelihood.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThere is a disability employment gap.
