Her research explores the potential for AI and robots to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW128213319 BCX0\">benefit<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW128213319 BCX0\"> society through learning, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW128213319 BCX0\">teaching<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW128213319 BCX0\"> and therapy in domestic and public settings.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW128213319 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Getting the bug for computers<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"281\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2388 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/imperial-people\/files\/2025\/01\/mistyF2-300x281.jpeg\" alt=\"A robot next to a tablet device\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nicole says she was interested in computers from an early age \u2013 in part thanks to her father, who had a degree in computer science.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI saw how computers could do things for you \u2013 and do them quickly. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I started with some online courses, which eventually led to a degree in computer science at Universidade Federal do Paran\u00e1 in Brazil, which is where I\u2019m from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8220;While I was at university I became involved in robotics clubs and robotics research. I was fascinated by all things AI and robots and began to think about how you could programme them to help people in everyday life.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW200894700 BCX0\">Taking<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW200894700 BCX0\"> a people-centred approach<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nicole works in the field of human-robot interaction, which combines robotics, AI and some psychology.\u00a0 She\u2019s interested in how systems can be designed to understand people, then use that understanding to provide highly personalised support.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One example is a robot that can perform therapy for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThere\u2019s something magical that happens between children with autism and robots that helps them engage with therapy. They learn from the robots and develop skills that they can carry into their daily lives.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Early results indicate that this type of therapy is incredibly effective, with researchers seeing clinical improvements in children in just one month, compared to the several months or even a year it normally takes to see an impact.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How to build systems using a collaborative approach<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"249\" class=\"wp-image-2389 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/imperial-people\/files\/2025\/01\/part_ex-300x249.png\" alt=\"A woman holding dumbbells and looking at a tutorial on a phone\" \/>Nicole explains that her team doesn\u2019t start by building a system that they think will help people \u2013 they start by engaging with specialists. They also work closely with the people receiving the therapy and their family members.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cA big part of my work involves understanding not just the robot, but the user. We want to build systems that can model individuals\u2019 skills, preferences and personalities in a way that means it can provide highly personalised teaching or therapy.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nicole also makes it clear that there are additional considerations that need to be considered when it comes to these technologies, particularly around privacy and data protection.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIf we\u2019re developing robots that will be in people\u2019s homes, we need to be really careful with privacy \u2013 especially when it comes to more vulnerable groups like children and older people. We\u2019re asking questions like \u2018how do we preserve privacy?\u2019 and \u2018how do we collect the minimal amount of data?\u2019&#8221; <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The future of robotics<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Does Nicole envision a future where we buy robots in the supermarkets, like any other gadget? Not just yet, but she thinks that one day they may be more common in households.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cRobots are still quite expensive \u2013 a very simple social robotic system can cost upwards of \u00a35,000, which is out of the price range of most people.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe\u2019re moving in the right direction \u2013 a former colleague of mine, for example, is building an educational robot that costs around \u00a31,000.
