He describes marketing and education as his two passions, and he has volunteered as both a school governor for <a href=\"https:\/\/campsbourne.haringey.sch.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Campsbourne School and Extended Services<\/a> and as Communications Director for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outvertising.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Outvertising,<\/a> a not-for-profit organisation which works to make advertising more inclusive \u2013 both for those working in the sector, and in terms of advertising content.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2435\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2435\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"298\" class=\"wp-image-2435 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/imperial-people\/files\/2025\/02\/OC_School-Governor-awayday_Imperial-People-1-300x298.png\" alt=\"A group of people sat outside with a person in the foreground taking a selfie.\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2435\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Owen attending an Campsbourne School Governor&#8217;s away day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Owen\u2019s current role involves supporting a team of 12 staff in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/enterprise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enterprise Division<\/a>, each of whom look after a specific portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen they need something to happen, especially when it comes to systems, I\u2019m the person they come to. I describe myself as like the Wizard of Oz \u2013 if I\u2019ve done my job well, you won\u2019t see me, you\u2019ll only see the outputs of my work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have an excellent manager and an excellent team. It\u2019s really edifying to be surrounded by people who absolutely love their jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the next year, Owen is looking forward to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/operational-improvement\/our-projects\/greatworkplace\/white-city-professional-services-hub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White City move<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the moment, the Enterprise team is split over multiple buildings so I\u2019m really excited to see what happens when everyone is back in the same location, and to see the impact of the exchange of ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Owen told us how he puts LGBTQ+ History Month in context with Pride.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, Pride is more of a demonstration, it\u2019s about drawing a line in the sand of where we are now and where we are going. History Month is more of a celebration and about where we\u2019ve come from.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2437\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2437\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"wp-image-2437 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/imperial-people\/files\/2025\/02\/OC_ZurichPride_Imperial-People.jpg\" alt=\"Three people smiling at a camera with an outdoor stage in the background\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2437\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Owen attending Zurich Pride<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re seeing the erosion of LGBTQ+ rights and the suppression of our voices in the world around us, and I think that History Month prevents that from happening. It identifies those people who made progress, made statements, and how that\u2019s been built upon brick by brick \u2013 even if they didn\u2019t know it at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cThinking about the present day, I think it\u2019s important now more than ever to be present and do what you can to amplify and advocate for voices who may not have the ability to talk about their communities, their struggles, and the things they\u2019ve achieved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImperial aspires to get it right and that\u2019s the important thing. I don\u2019t expect a person to be perfect and I don\u2019t expect an organisation to be perfect, and I think celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month is a great example of an authentic step towards authentic equality, diversity and inclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Inclusivity in action <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For Owen, inclusivity is about accountability and visibility. Something he values at Imperial is the ways in which he\u2019s able to provide feedback to the organisation \u2013 for example, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/operational-improvement\/our-projects\/greatworkplace\/white-city-professional-services-hub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White City move<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy experience was that the organisation was really clear about the time frames, what was happening, why it was happening, and to whom it was happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Owen also told us that he has a great manager who supports his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/human-resources\/procedures\/workplace-adjustments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">workplace adjustments<\/a> for ADHD.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2438\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2438\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"301\" class=\"wp-image-2438 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/imperial-people\/files\/2025\/02\/OC_Enterprise-Comms_Trip-to-the-design-museum_Imperial-People.jpeg\" alt=\"A group of people smiling at the camera\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2438\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Enterprise communications trip to the Design Museum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMy manager has been amazing; she has asked me what resources she can use to better understand ADHD. For me, she\u2019s a real role model in the sense of how management at Imperial should be.
