Women at Imperial<\/a>: Know no bounds<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

To mark <\/span>Women at Imperial Week<\/span><\/a>, the co-Presidents of the Society for <\/span>Women and Non-Binary Individuals in Physics<\/span><\/a> shared the work they do to create inclusive spaces in the <\/span>Department of Physics<\/span><\/a>, how they are creating networking opportunities, and why it\u2019s important to highlight underrepresentation in science.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Creating space for underrepresented groups<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Having access to a supportive network is something that drew both co-Presidents to join the society and take roles on the committee.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Amaya Calvo Sanchez is now a PhD student and first got involved in the society during her undergraduate degree. She valued the sense of community, particularly whilst studying during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis society gives me a sense of belonging where people value me and my work\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Coming from an all-girls school, Amy Thornton, <\/span>Physics MSci<\/span><\/a> student, found new challenges studying physics as a woman at university and suffered with imposter syndrome. Joining the committee has helped her gain confidence.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI would never have considered myself good enough to do a PhD, but being part of this committee has changed that and I\u2019m eager to pay it forward.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They want to create space for anyone who needs it in the Department of Physics and recently renamed the society \u2018Women and Non-Binary Individuals in Physics\u2019.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Networking leads to opportunities\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The society runs social events as well as educational activities such as seminars, development courses and outreach opportunities. The aim is to create a network within Physics connecting undergraduates, postgraduates, postdocs and staff.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Amaya stresses the value of networking for undergraduates in the early stages of their career: \u201cHaving access to conversations with people who are further on in their career is really impactful.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Amy credits writing for the society\u2019s <\/span>interview series<\/span><\/a> with inspiring her research interests.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLast year I interviewed a PhD student in the <\/span>Plasma Physics Group<\/span><\/a> and that really sparked my interest in fusion energy and plasma physics. I\u2019m now thinking about PhDs in that area.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The society run a mentoring scheme to support undergraduate students with the transition to PhD, and the scheme previously won <\/span>EDI Seed Funding<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Inspiring the next generation\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Taking part in outreach activities is Amy\u2019s favourite part of being involved in the committee and something she finds really rewarding.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHaving Year 12 students say to me \u2018your talk has inspired me\u2019 \u2013 I just don\u2019t think that feeling can be matched\u201d.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Amaya emphasises the value of awareness events like International Women\u2019s Day and Women at Imperial Week.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to continue to share experiences and talk about women in science to raise awareness among people in policy and leadership positions\u201d.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Imperial role models\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Amaya and Amy agree there are plenty of women at Imperial that have inspired them.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Amy praises the work of Jasmine Ajaz, outreach coordinator for the society.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHer work in schools will have an impact, influencing girls studying GCSE and A level physics so that they feel like they can go on to study at university.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Amaya highlights the work of Isabel Rabey, Senior Teaching Fellow in the Department of Physics.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe shows such leadership and passion, defending the best interests of gender minorities on multiple staff committees.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The society are looking for new members, particularly PhD students and postdocs.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
