{"id":2699,"date":"2025-10-17T08:47:51","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T08:47:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/imperial-people\/?p=2699"},"modified":"2025-10-17T08:55:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T08:55:15","slug":"peter-bryan-connecting-black-researchers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/imperial-people\/2025\/10\/17\/peter-bryan-connecting-black-researchers\/","title":{"rendered":"Peter Bryan: Connecting Black researchers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>\u201cThe Black Doctoral Network is a space where PhD students can socialise, network and get advice\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"684\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2701\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/imperial-people\/files\/2025\/10\/pb_photo-684x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"Peter Bryan\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Peter Bryan is a fourth-year postgraduate research student in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/bioengineering\">Department of Bioengineering<\/a> and co-chair of the Black Doctoral Network.<\/p>\n<p>He is also one of the first recipients of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/james-west-scholarships\/\">James West scholarship<\/a> which aims to address the under-representation of Black and mixed Black Heritage PhD students within the department.<\/p>\n<h3><!--more--><strong>Black Doctoral Network<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/early-career-researcher-institute\/networks-events-and-funds\/staff-and-student-networks\/black-doctoral-network-\/\">Black Doctoral Network<\/a> is a student-run community that supports Black PhD students at Imperial. They run events and socials centred around sharing research, networking and connecting with other students. They also collaborate with other universities in London.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Black Doctoral Network is a space where PhD students can socialise, network and get advice. Although the focus is on PhD students, we also welcome Master\u2019s\u00a0 students who are interested in continuing their postgraduate studies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter was initially unsure about joining the network committee and taking on additional work alongside his PhD, but he now reflects on the experience it has given him and how much he has enjoyed it. He has been able to see another side of university life \u2013 applying for funding, organising and promoting events, and coordinating with speakers and partners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was persuaded to join the committee and ended up becoming co-chair! It\u2019s been amazing working on the committee with Naima, Maya, Kemi, and Egheosa to achieve our goals. When you\u2019re doing a PhD, you don\u2019t always see the results of your work right away, so it\u2019s especially rewarding to celebrate our successes together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More volunteers are needed to help run the Black Doctoral Network, as many of the committee members are reaching the end of their PhDs. <a href=\"mailto:blackdoctoralnetwork@imperial.ac.uk\">Get in touch with the committee<\/a> if you are interested in finding out more about joining the network or the committee.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Improving academia for Black people \u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Peter recognises two approaches to supporting Black people in the academic world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to tackle the systemic issues within universities and institutions, which is obviously really important and is being worked on, but it\u2019s a long process. We also need to consider the people who are here now, and how to make spaces that are for us and by us. The Black Doctoral Network is a great example of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, 140 people joined the Black Doctoral Network for their yearly event \u2018Empower \u2013 Connecting Black Researchers in the UK\u2019. It included panel talks from Black professionals on their PhD and post-PhD experiences, interactive career workshops, a poster session showcasing research projects, and networking opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>The event was funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/black-at-imperial.com\/events\/\">Black Inclusivity Catalyst<\/a>, an initiative led by a team of Imperial academics working in partnership with organisations and the Black community to develop lasting solutions that advance Black representation and success in STEM and business.<\/p>\n<p>Other initiatives at Imperial include the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/early-career-researcher-institute\/networks-events-and-funds\/staff-and-student-networks\/black-postdoctoral-network\/\">Black Postdoctoral Network<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/equality\/staff-networks\/imperial-as-one\/\">Imperial as One<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperialcollegeunion.org\/activities\/a-to-z\/african-caribbean\">African Caribbean Society<\/a>. The Black Doctoral Network works closely with these groups to increase networking, support students and staff, and run events. A number of events are taking place during October to mark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/equality\/events\/black-history-month\/\">Black History Month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack History Month can feel performative when institutions focus on retelling history rather than examining how their own history connects to the issues and themes we still see today. That\u2019s why I\u2019m really looking forward to the events being run this year including the debate night event being run by Imperial College Union. It\u2019s important to hold space for these difficult discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Exploring the world<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2702\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2702\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"709\" class=\"wp-image-2702 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/imperial-people\/files\/2025\/10\/pb_1-1024x709.jpg\" alt=\"Peter white-water kayaking\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Peter white-water kayaking<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Peter has made the most of opportunities available to him at Imperial.
