{"id":2716,"date":"2025-11-14T08:29:28","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T08:29:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/imperial-people\/?p=2716"},"modified":"2025-11-13T15:48:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T15:48:11","slug":"sana-kardar-awareness-and-inclusion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/imperial-people\/2025\/11\/14\/sana-kardar-awareness-and-inclusion\/","title":{"rendered":"Sana Kardar: Awareness and inclusion"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Celebrating Disability History Month<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" class=\"wp-image-2722 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/imperial-people\/files\/2025\/11\/Sana-Kingston-1.jpg\" alt=\"Sana Kardar\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u201cFor me, Disability History Month is about awareness, visibility and inclusion.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Sana is a Postgraduate Taught student on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/study\/courses\/postgraduate-taught\/bioscience-futures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MSc Bioscience Futures: Communication, Innovation and Entrepreneurship<\/a> course in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/nhli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Heart and Lung Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The course combines entrepreneurial, communication and commercialisation skills to address global challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Sana enjoys how interactive her course is and says that it bridges the gap between her undergraduate biomedical degree and applications of research in the real world.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have workshops and panel discussions alongside our lectures, so there are lots of opportunities to engage in discussion and practise public speaking skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sana says that she\u2019s had a supportive experience at Imperial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone is given an opportunity to participate, and each person\u2019s contribution is valued. The academic and administrative teams have both been great \u2013 they\u2019re really responsive and willing to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of her highlights from the course is the 16-week placement she carried out with Imperial College Healthcare Trust.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI worked on cervical and breast cancer screening programmes and tried to understand why some women and people who require screenings choose not to attend them. I delivered a report with recommendations that included replicating data from private screenings on NHS records and developing storytelling narratives for patients and families on the importance of screenings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2719 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/imperial-people\/files\/2025\/11\/IMG-20250320-WA0237.jpg\" alt=\"Sana in front of the door at number 10 Downing Street\" \/>Alongside her studies, Sana has taken part in several hackathons through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperialenterpriselab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enterprise Lab<\/a> and won awards for her projects. She\u2019s joined networking and collider events and co-founded a startup called Sanaa which aims to bridge the structural gaps in healthcare for women and people assigned female at birth. Sana has also received several awards, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheinspires.org.uk\/she-inspires-awards-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018She Inspires\u2019 Award<\/a> which was given at the House of Lords, and she was recognised at No. 10 Downing Street for creating awareness of women&#8217;s health issues.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Accessing the Disability Advisory Service <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sana has received support from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/disability-advisory-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Disability Advisory Service<\/a> to help her manage her health conditions alongside her studies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met with a disability advisor as soon as I started and found them really helpful and willing to listen. They helped me access a mentor and were supportive about helping me find a different mentor when I requested it. My new mentor understands how my health conditions affect me and he\u2019s been incredibly supportive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sana also received support from her departmental disability advisor, who advocated for her to have extra time for her assessments due to the fluctuating nature of her conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Sana advises students to register with the Disability Advisory Service as early as possible, because slots can fill up quickly at the start of the academic year, and to know who your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/disability-advisory-service\/about-us\/team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disability advisor<\/a> is and to keep in touch with them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were times during my course when I was dealing with a lot of things and my disability advisor checked in with me, which I found really helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sana lives with endometriosis and fibromyalgia and said it can be challenging to have an invisible illness. \u201cI might look fine on the outside but on the inside be in immense pain. I\u2019ve found it useful to talk to people who will be able to help me, whether that\u2019s the admin team for a course, course directors, or module leaders.
