\u201cThe thing that gets me up in the morning is knowing I can make a difference \u2013 not just through my own work, but by facilitating others to support students.\u201d<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Amandip Bisel joined Imperial in August 2024 as Head of Education and Student Experience Strategy Projects in the Education Office.\u00a0With a background in widening participation and a PhD from Imperial, she\u00a0is passionate about\u00a0improving students\u2019 experience at Imperial\u00a0regardless of their background.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Creating the Class of 2030<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Education Office<\/span><\/a>\u00a0works\u00a0across faculties to ensure every student enjoys a high-quality,\u00a0equitable\u00a0experience\u00a0\u2013\u00a0regardless of course or campus. It plays\u00a0a central role\u00a0in the\u00a0<\/span>Class of 2030<\/span><\/a>\u00a0strand of Imperial\u2019s\u00a0Science for Humanity\u00a0strategy, aiming to create the most talented, enterprising, and diverse cohort yet.\u00a0Amandip works\u00a0on a wide variety of projects to make this vision a reality.\u00a0\u201cThe thing that gets me up in the morning is knowing I can make a difference\u00a0\u2013\u00a0not just through my own work, but by facilitating others to support students.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From Imperial Thrive to\u00a0StudentShapers<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

One project\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0particularly proud of is\u00a0<\/span>Imperial Thrive<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0which offers pre-arrival residentials for under-represented students. These events help students build connections, meet tutors, and settle into campus life before term begins.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThrive\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0even an idea when I started in August 2024. By September this year,\u00a0we\u2019d\u00a0delivered a residential for over 200 students.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0about building belonging and supporting students throughout their time at Imperial.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another focus is\u00a0improving\u00a0assessment and feedback\u00a0for students. Amandip is working with academics to meet evolving student expectations for more detailed, meaningful feedback and clearer links between assessments and future careers.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur students are demanding more. They want detailed, meaningful feedback\u00a0\u2013\u00a0not just headlines. They want to understand why\u00a0something\u2019s\u00a0wrong and how it connects to their future.\u201d She adds, \u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0trying to be more radical.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0not about assessing for assessment\u2019s sake\u00a0\u2013\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0about making sure it works for both staff and students.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

StudentShapers<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is another\u00a0programme\u00a0run by the Education Office\u00a0that Amandip is particularly proud of.\u00a0It is a project that\u00a0engages\u00a0students as partners in learning and teaching. This year, ring-fenced funding for student-initiated projects is a major step forward. \u201cStudents often\u00a0identify\u00a0challenges that staff might miss. We want to empower them to take ownership of their learning experience and collaborate with staff to drive change.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Coming home<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Amandip\u00a0has\u00a0a\u00a0deep personal connection\u00a0with\u00a0Imperial.\u00a0She\u00a0was among the first to complete a\u00a0social\u00a0sciences\u00a0PhD here, researching medical school outreach and\u00a0widening participation. \u201cDoing a social science PhD at Imperial was a unique experience.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0great to see that there are more of those now\u00a0\u2013\u00a0it shows\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0expanding our understanding of what impactful research looks like.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Returning to Imperial felt natural:\u00a0\u201cWhen I came back, it really was like coming home. I felt like I already understood a lot of the challenges\u00a0we\u2019d\u00a0be looking to address\u00a0\u2013\u00a0not just through my research, but because\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0been a student here too.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Life beyond the office<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Outside of work, Amandip loves swimming and\u00a0attending live music gigs. A\u00a0recent highlight was watching\u00a0Eyrkah\u00a0Badu\u00a0at the Royal Albert Hall,\u00a0conveniently\u00a0located\u00a0next to Imperial\u2019s South Kensington Campus. Travelling is another passion, and she has enjoyed recent trips to Albania and Denmark and then to further afield\u00a0to places such as India and Dominican\u00a0Replublic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
