She said: \u201cThe opportunity to undertake two separate research projects was particularly appealing, as it allowed me to gain a diverse range of technical skills while developing in<\/span>\u2011<span data-contrast=\"auto\">depth knowledge of cancer biology.\u201d\u00a0 Imperial College London\u2019s reputation as a world<\/span>\u2011<span data-contrast=\"auto\">class institution further influenced her decision.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Her\u00a0MRes\u00a0research\u00a0contributed to a published paper and led to an invitation to apply for a PhD position in the same lab, funded by AstraZeneca.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Shaping the student experience<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During her\u00a0MRes\u00a0degree, Georgia worked part-time and took on teaching roles. Through this she\u00a0became involved in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/students\/studentshapers\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">StudentShapers\u00a0programme<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which\u00a0offers students the opportunity to undertake projects in partnership with staff to improve the learning and teaching experience at Imperial.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As part of this programme, Georgia helped shape the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/students\/attributes-and-aspirations\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Attributes and Aspirations<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0course which helps student develop transferable skills\u00a0and plan for their career following graduation.\u00a0She collaborated with Teaching Fellows and other students to\u00a0determine\u00a0the course content, based on educational research and personal experience.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She says the experience helped her develop skills which supported her own academic career. \u201cMy involvement in\u00a0StudentShapers\u00a0helped me develop time management, project management and teamworking skills.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt also encouraged me to consider the bigger picture of my career and set milestones for\u00a0myself.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She\u00a0recommends that other students fully immerse themselves in the course. \u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0the culmination of many student experiences, combined with\u00a0expertise\u00a0from skills staff members,\u00a0and designed to make your educational career easier.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIn particular, I valued the\u00a0tailored advice\u00a0which\u00a0supports\u00a0students through\u00a0the transition from undergraduate\u00a0to postgraduate studies.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a\u00a0significant\u00a0change\u00a0which people often forget, and this course\u00a0was a\u00a0really\u00a0helpful\u00a0as a guide through it.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Research collaboration and learning from others<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Georgia is now part of an ambitious postdoctoral research project\u00a0funded by AstraZeneca. Her work focuses on expanding and characterising an engineered\u00a0cell line\u00a0panel of\u00a0estrogen\u00a0receptor mutations, with the aim of generating evidence to support the consideration of rarer activating mutations in future breast cancer clinical trials.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She said: \u201cI really enjoy the collaboration aspect of my work and being able to learn from others. I want\u00a0to keep pushing myself,\u202ftaking on more teaching, building networks, and preparing for the next stage of my career.
