As Deputy President (Welfare) at Imperial College Union\u00a0(ICU), Anson\u00a0To\u00a0has spent the past year creating tangible change for students across Imperial.\u00a0Inspired by their time as LGBTQ+ Officer, they were\u00a0elected\u00a0to\u00a0the role\u00a0in the summer of 2025 and have since graduated\u00a0from\u00a0their\u00a0degree in\u00a0<\/span>Molecular Bioengineering<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Advocacy in action\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Anson\u00a0first got a taste for advocacy in the volunteer role of LGBTQ+ Officer\u00a0within\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>Liberation and Community Networks at ICU<\/span><\/a>. They\u00a0expected the role to\u00a0mainly involve\u00a0planning events but\u00a0found the\u00a0focus on advocacy rewarding.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBeing\u00a0LGBTQ+ Officer gave me experience of grassroots\u00a0committees and meetings, but I really wanted to know who influences what, and how decisions are made. Being in the Deputy President (Welfare) has opened my eyes to that.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn a position with more access to senior leaders at Imperial, I have\u00a0had the opportunity\u00a0to influence\u00a0decisions.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Real world impact\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Supporting\u00a0and\u00a0representing\u00a0marginalised\u00a0groups\u00a0at\u00a0Imperial,\u00a0such\u00a0as\u00a0the LGBTQ+ community,\u00a0is a key part of\u00a0Anson\u2019s\u00a0elected role.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u00a0is important to me that the LGBTQ+ community is supported, especially trans+\u00a0communities and allies, given the current political climate.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They have worked with the\u00a0<\/span>Student Counselling and Mental Health Advice Service<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>to share ideas on LGBTQ+ awareness training for staff. They also met with the\u00a0<\/span>Imperial College Health\u00a0Centre<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to discuss\u00a0issues that trans students face when\u00a0trying to access health care at university.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This work has inspired Anson to go into a career in public health: \u201cLooking forward, I am hoping to get into public health or advocacy work. Being Deputy President (Welfare) aligns with my values and has really influenced the way I see my career. It has helped me\u00a0realise\u00a0what I enjoy doing.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reflecting on\u00a0other\u00a0achievements\u00a0in the role, Anson is proud of seeing\u00a0manifesto goals become a reality. They\u00a0advocated\u00a0for\u00a0cheaper meals on\u00a0campus to help with the\u00a0cost-of-living\u00a0crisis and to extend the food provision in the library cafe for students studying in the evening.\u00a0They also campaigned to extend the hours of the shuttle bus service for students.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Finding community\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Anson found\u00a0a supportive community\u00a0through their involvement in student societies such as the\u00a0<\/span>Imperial College School of Medicine Students\u2019 Union\u2019s\u00a0drama society<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>IQ<\/span><\/a>, Imperial\u2019s LGBTQ+ student society.\u00a0This sense of belonging\u00a0and support from friends\u00a0inspired them to\u00a0run for\u00a0student representation roles and advocate for change.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This Pride Month, Anson encourages students to run for\u00a0advocacy\u00a0roles.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBeing involved in IQ and taking on the role of LGBTQ+ Officer was a\u00a0really good\u00a0learning experience.\u00a0I\u00a0am always happy to talk to anyone about my experience\u00a0and would encourage others to consider applying. Even if you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0want to\u00a0run for\u00a0a role, you can be involved in other ways.
