I have never experienced anything like this in the quarter of a century since I qualified.&#8221;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I am an\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/imperialbrc.nihr.ac.uk\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">NIHR<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0R<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">esearch Professor in Endocrinology &amp; Metabolism and Head\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/metabolism-digestion-reproduction\/research\/diabetes-endocrinology-metabolism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology &amp; Metabolism<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. In my current role<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I have the privilege of treating patients in the NHS, teaching medical students<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and postgraduate students<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and carrying out cutting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">edge research. Every day is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">different<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and I couldn\u2019t think of a more interesting and rewarding job \u2013 26 years after qualifying as a doctor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I still love what I do<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Everything<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0came to an abrupt halt with COVID-19 and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the UK\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lockdown in March. My team and I all volunteered to be redeployed full<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">time to care for COVID-19 patients in Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (mainly at Charing Cross Hospital<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">his<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was an easy decision<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s clinically trained doctors<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0this was the one time when the country needed the NHS more than ever<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I have never experienced anything like this in the quarter of a century since I qualified.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/stories\/frontline-insights\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">worked together in \u2018pods\u2019 as a team<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and this mean<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that we could support each other as we treated the relentless numbers of COVID-19 patients which came through the hospital<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0front door<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2013 we are all experienced doctors<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0but no one had ever treated any patients with COVID-19 before<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t was a steep learning curve to know what the best treatment was for the patients we treated and to cope with seeing patients\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on a daily basis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0who tragically passed away from th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0virus.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This was made worse by the fact that the patients<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0family and loved ones could not be with them and we supported the patients, families and each other to get through the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pandemic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Anyone<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0who had seen<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this would take\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">metre<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0social distancing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">seriously as the virus knows no rule<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and there is still very little we can do to cure patients currently.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In May<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the number of cases of COVID-19 in London fell and my team and I have returned to our previous roles in a safe way. All our meetings are now on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Microsoft\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Teams \/ Zoom and we have managed to submit\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a number of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0publications from research we had done\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">before\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">COVID-19.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0have also\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/news\/198437\/high-cortisol-levels-associated-with-greater\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">published a paper on the stress hormone levels in COVID-19 patients<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0from our time on the front line which will help to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">optimise<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the care of COVID-19 patients in the future.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We are now in the \u2018new normal\u2019 phase of working and all need to support each other to get through these challenging times in the knowledge we will emerge the other end post COVID-19 and get our lives back to normal<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0but this will take some time.
