Baxter \u2013 our border terrier<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0has really improved my wellbeing through lockdown. Keeping to our routine of walks, dinner and play has given me company\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">through the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lockdown<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, when\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it was not possible to see my partner, friends or family.<br \/>\n<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a Mental Health First Aider<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I\u2019ve reached out to friends, family and colleagues to make sure they are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">okay,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hey\u2019ve checked in on me too! We have all been there for each other. Looking after your own wellbeing is so important<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Dog walks, drawing and good sleep are ways that I\u2019ve kept mentally well<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sleep has always been important to me. I completed my PhD at\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he University of Manchester in 2017<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0explored how people were sleeping in UK prisons. When I finished,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0moved to London and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0joined the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/patient-safety-translational-research-centre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">NIHR Patient Safety Translational Research Centre (PSTRC)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/global-health-innovation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Institute of Global Health Innovation<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at Imperial to become a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">R<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">esearch\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ssociate in their mental health arm.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Since then, now as a research fellow, I\u2019ve been working hard to put mental health at the top of the agenda\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Imperial,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">using<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0mixed methods approaches and working with people with experience of mental health difficulties as research partners,\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">not\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">participants. Working together through all stages of the research project is called co-production.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Despite the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">COVID-19 lockdown<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> we <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">continued\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to co-produce our project called\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/participate.mqmentalhealth.org\/studies\/ccopey-young-peoples-mental-health-and-coping-styles-during-and-after-covid-19-lockdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">CCopeY<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. We worked together with young people to conduct a mixed methods study \u2013 national survey first and then in-depth interviews \u2013 to understand how COVID-19 lockdown has affected their mental health and how they are coping during lockdown. Some young people have really struggled with their mental health during lockdown and yet most have found a way to cope \u2013 maintaining a routine,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">using<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0distraction techniques and being outside\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">were\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">identified as key strategies.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Usually I interview people\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">face-to-face<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0but I was able to push this project forward despite working from my spare bedroom by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">using\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">different innovative techniques and technologies. For example,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we have used<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Microsoft Teams to conduct our interviews,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jamboard<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to collate ideas on virtual post-it notes and Trello to change, edit and move \u201ccodes\u201d taken from our interviews.
