Being able to reflect quickly and effectively can make you a better student and help you make better, possibly more efficient, decisions about a whole range of things, e.g. your future career, how to manage your time and even which tube to take to get home.<\/p>\n<h2>Reflection \u2013 how do I do it?<\/h2>\n<p>David Kolb (1984) developed a practical way to reflect with his <strong>Experiential Learning Cycle<\/strong>. The cycle explains a process where you take an experience, consider what you noticed throughout the process, identify what you learnt and think about what you might do differently next time.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_155\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-155\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.torontomu.ca\/experiential-learning\/faculty-staff\/kolbs-el-cycle\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"wp-image-155 size-medium\" title=\"Toronto Metropolitan University\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/learning-well\/files\/2026\/04\/RU-KolbDiagram-rgb-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-155\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image courtesy of Toronto Metropolitan University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To make this easier, we\u2019ve translated Kolb\u2019s Cycle into four questions which you can use as a template to support your own reflection process:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>What happened? (briefly)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>What stood out or surprised me?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>What did I learn or re-learn?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>What will I try differently next time?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Record your thoughts in whatever way works best for you, e.g. write them down in a journal, make yourself voice notes on your phone, create a spreadsheet to store your answers in.<\/p>\n<h2>Reflection \u2013 how can it support my studies?<\/h2>\n<p>Reflecting on what you\u2019re learning, and the ways you\u2019re going about that learning, can bring a whole range of gains. Top benefits of reflecting on your studies include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Deeper learning:<\/strong> Reflection <strong>consolidates<\/strong> concepts and bridges theory with practice.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Building metacognition:<\/strong> Reflection <strong>enables you to learn how you learn<\/strong>, allowing you to spot strategies that help (or hinder) your performance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Understanding feedback <em>better<\/em>:<\/strong> Reflection <strong>guides you<\/strong> to turn supervisors\u2019 or markers\u2019 comments into actionable improvements that you can put into practice for the next assessment, which will hopefully then lead to better marks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Adding in reflection to your toolbox of study strategies so that this becomes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/media\/imperial-college\/staff\/education-development-unit\/public\/LWP---Finding-study-strategies-that-work-for-you-is-an-ongoing-process.pdf\">an ongoing process<\/a> can genuinely help you to study both more effectively <strong>and<\/strong> more efficiently as you continue through your studies.<\/p>\n<h2>Reflection \u2013can this be useful in other ways and in other contexts?<\/h2>\n<p>Absolutely! Reflecting more broadly on your experiences (in any domain of your life!) can help you to understand what you enjoy (or don\u2019t enjoy), and this can be useful as part of your future career decision-making process. Top benefits for reflecting about your career include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Developing stronger evidence-based stories:<\/strong> Reflection produces clear STAR stories (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for applications and interviews.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Figuring out what you want to do:<\/strong> Reflection enables you to clarify interests, values, and environments where you thrive, guiding smarter career choices and building confidence in your career decision-making.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Easier transitions:<\/strong> Reflection following participation in real-world experiences (e.g. hackathons, work experience, club and society events) prepares you to be more adaptable so that when the time comes you&#8217;ll be able to move into a professional setting more easily.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Ultimately, there\u2019s a lot to gain and really nothing to lose!<\/strong> Adding quick reflections into your routine, e.g. after you finish a project, have an experience or receive feedback, can help you become a better student and understand more about yourself to help you get the future you want. <strong>Why not try it today to find out how reflection can help you become a stronger learner and person?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Katie Dallison<\/strong> is a Careers Consultant in the Careers Service and co-authored the\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/students\/attributes-and-aspirations\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/students\/attributes-and-aspirations\/\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"0\">Attributes and Aspirations<\/a> online course which helps students develop transferable skills.
