Congratulations to MDR’s Jen Barcroft (gynaecology) and Bronacha Mylrea-Foley (obstetrics) who scooped both young investigator prizes, at the closing ceremony of ISUOG 2024 (Budapest).

I was awarded the Young Investigator Award for Obstetrics for my presentation on “Association between adverse neonatal outcome and maternal haemodynamics and biomarkers in SGA and FGR”.
I have been working with Professor Christoph Lees since 2019 to set up the TRUFFLE 2 RCT, a multicentre, randomised trial of timing delivery in late onset FGR with 52 recruiting hospitals across Europe. Within this study I set up nested observational studies assessing maternal haemodynamics and biomarkers, trying to ascertain the role of these variables in pregnancies affected by fetal growth restriction and how they might help to predict which babies will be compromised.

I presented the results from a prospective validation study of a machine learning-based model (Ovarian Diagnostic Score) that is able to accurately identify and classify an adnexal mass on pelvic ultrasound. The ODS model combines deep learning for segmentation (identify the lesion) and a radiomics-based approach for classification (benign vs malignant). The ODS model is able to identify and classify an adnexal mass on ultrasound without human input, at a comparable level to the best performing diagnostic model IOTA ADNEX. This study highlights the potential exciting role of machine learning within the gynaecological ultrasound pipeline.
