The article was published in the journal\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0091743515001838\">Preventive Medicine<\/a>. We found that coverage of the programme was low in the first four years and there was a wide variation in coverage between general practice.<\/p>\n<p>There was an increase in statin prescribing but only about one in three people who attended for a Health Check and who were found to have a cardiovascular risk score (20% or more 10-year risk of cardiovascular disease) were prescribed a statin.<\/p>\n<p>We concluded that unless coverage of the NHS Health Check programme improved and uptake of statins in high-risk groups increased, the programme would not deliver its predicted benefits in reducing morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease.<\/p>\n<p>The article was covered by a number of media outlets including the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-3120887\/Thousands-patients-refuse-statins-one-three-patients-need-pills-agree-start-using-following-routine-check-ups.html\">Daily Mail<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pulsetoday.co.uk\/clinical\/cardiovascular\/dh-commissioned-analysis-to-cast-further-doubt-on-nhs-health-checks\/20010149.article#.VXp9x89Viko\">Pulse<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An article from my research group examined coverage of the NHS Health Check programme in England.
