This week, we speak to Jessica Govey-Scotland, who studied at IMSE in 2020-2021.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_398\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-398\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" class=\"wp-image-398 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/molecular-science-engineering\/files\/2022\/08\/Jess-Govey-Scotland-graduation_3000x2000-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Jessica Govey-Scotland outside the Royal Albert Hall on her graduation day from the IMSE MRes\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-398\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jessica Govey-Scotland outside the Royal Albert Hall on her graduation day from the IMSE MRes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Jess&#8217;s career to date<\/h3>\n<p>Jess studied Chemistry at the University of Kent in Canterbury. After completing a computational research project in her final year, she developed an interest in molecular modelling and optimisation of processes. She joined the IMSE Molecular Science and Engineering MRes to develop this.<\/p>\n<p>On the MRes in 2020-21, she developed\u00a0<em>in vitro<\/em>\u00a0dermal absorption methods for screening hazardous cosmetics. This work was supervised by\u00a0<a title=\"Link opens in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/people\/m.friddin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr\u00a0Mark Friddin<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Link opens in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/people\/connor.myant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr\u00a0Connor Myant<\/a>, as a collaboration between the Dyson School of Design Engineering and the\u00a0<a title=\"Link opens in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/office-for-product-safety-and-standards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Office for Product Safety and Standards<\/a>\u00a0(OPSS), part of the Department for Business, Energy &amp; Industrial Strategy. She won the IMSE Prize for Excellence in her year.<\/p>\n<p>As part of\u00a0the course, she\u00a0did a 9-month placement at OPSS to complete her research project. Then she moved to the global consumer brands company\u00a0<a title=\"Link opens in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reckitt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reckitt\u00a0<\/a>to work in their Global Safety Assurance department. She collects and calculates toxicological and safety data from chemical databases\u00a0to assist in safety assessments and\u00a0supports business compliance relating to the\u00a0<a title=\"Link opens in new window\" href=\"registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals (REACH)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>What\u2019s your core scientific interest?<\/h4>\n<p>My core scientific interest is understanding the skin and various skin conditions. I explore how new approach methodologies (NAMs) could be applied to assess the effects of chemicals in products via dermal absorption.<\/p>\n<h4>How did the IMSE MRes prepare you for what you do now?<\/h4>\n<p>The IMSE MRes prepared me for my current role as it allowed me to work at the interface between science and regulation. The research project and industry placement were particularly valuable as I was\u00a0introduced to regulatory toxicology. I was able\u00a0to be\u00a0creative and\u00a0explore\u00a0innovative ideas to current challenges with\u00a0the development, validation, and application of NAMs within\u00a0chemical risk assessments\u00a0and the importance of harmonising scientific innovation and regulations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_399\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-399\" style=\"width: 275px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"275\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-399\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/molecular-science-engineering\/files\/2022\/08\/image2_1603122910934_x2-275x300.jpg\" alt=\"Jessica Govey-Scotland\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-399\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jessica Govey-Scotland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>What attracted you to this work?<\/h4>\n<p>The opportunity to develop my expertise in regulatory toxicology really attracted me to my current role as a REACH Safety Associate. This built on my research project during the IMSE course. Understanding REACH requirements and future opportunities to contribute to and advocate for regulatory changes, such as those relating to animal-free testing in chemical safety assessments, is particularly exciting.<\/p>\n<h4>What do you think the next generation of students need to know before they apply to the MRes?<\/h4>\n<p>The IMSE MRes is definitely challenging as it introduces many areas outside of your primary degree. However, the interdisciplinary approach that IMSE adopts is invaluable.
