It\u2019s that time of year when we say goodbye to summer and hello to shorter days, falling leaves and cooler temperatures. It\u2019s also that time of year when we say goodbye to one cohort of MRes students and hello to the new year\u2019s cohort.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>And this year in Britain it has also been a time to say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royal.uk\/queen-elizabeth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">goodbye to Queen Elizabeth II<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/constitution-unit\/research-areas\/monarchy-church-and-state\/accession-and-coronation\/planning-next-accession-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hello to King Charles III<\/a>. It has all been a bit of a rollercoaster!<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re celebrating good work completed, feeling sad that we won\u2019t be seeing some people again, and feeling excited that we get to work with new people, all at the same time.<\/p>\n<h3>First the ending: final MRes assessments<\/h3>\n<p>Our MRes cohort of 2021-22 presented the results of their research projects at a symposium in early September. The students each gave a very short \u201cflash\u201d presentations, and discussed the details of their research in the poster session. And thanks to UpCycle, one of IMSE&#8217;s industrial partners, for attending the celebration in person<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That was the same evening when we heard the Queen had died\u2026 and so began <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/the-demise-of-her-majesty-queen-elizabeth-ii-national-mourning-guidance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10 days of state protocol<\/a> that very few people living in Britain have seen before. This marked the end of a reign and set up the beginning of a new one.
