{"id":709,"date":"2023-11-13T18:19:25","date_gmt":"2023-11-13T18:19:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/molecular-science-engineering\/?p=709"},"modified":"2023-11-13T18:27:40","modified_gmt":"2023-11-13T18:27:40","slug":"interdisciplinary-education-leads-to-increased-earnings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/molecular-science-engineering\/2023\/11\/13\/interdisciplinary-education-leads-to-increased-earnings\/","title":{"rendered":"Interdisciplinary education leads to increased earnings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Greater exposure to interdisciplinarity\u2014especially for science majors\u2014is associated with increased earnings after college graduation.&#8221; This is one of the conclusions of an article on interdisciplinary education by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1073\/pnas.2221915120\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Han et al in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, published in 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_710\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-710\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" class=\"wp-image-710 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/molecular-science-engineering\/files\/2023\/11\/IMSE_Graduation_2019-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-710\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">IMSE students graduating in 2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Great news for MRes students at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/molecular-science-engineering\/masters-in-molecular-engineering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IMSE<\/a>! Of course we at IMSE have argued for years that interdisciplinary education is good because it&#8217;s a better way of thinking about the world. And that it is more likely to deliver solutions to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.resonanceglobal.com\/blog\/the-characteristics-of-wicked-problems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wicked problems<\/a>. But here&#8217;s evidence that it benefits our students economically as well. (In the near term at least: the paper measured outcomes only 1 year post graduation.)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_712\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-712\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" class=\"wp-image-712 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/molecular-science-engineering\/files\/2023\/11\/IMSE_student_seminar2-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-712\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/molecular-science-engineering\/masters-in-molecular-engineering\/our-staff-and-students\/alumni-profiles\/griffin-gui\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Griffin Gui<\/a> in an IMSE seminar during his MRes studies.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On a more strategic note, the article notes that universities often say they deliver more interdisciplinary education than they do. The evidence comes from comparing course outlines to course syllabi. I wonder how we at Imperial College London score here?<\/p>\n<p>This picks up on some really interesting discussions about interdisciplinary work I had at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/events\/163743\/the-day-of-doubt\/\">Day of Doubt<\/a> conference at Imperial in September. I co-chaired a session with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/people\/a.gilbert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alyssa Gilbert<\/a>, of the Grantham Centre for Climate Change and the Environment at Imperial College London. We didn&#8217;t talk about money&#8230;. We talked about how difficult it often is (at least in universities in the UK) to get interdisciplinary work organised, started, funded, and how to build a career on it. There were some great discussions with researchers, research funders and people from the consulting world.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_711\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-711\"
