{"id":336,"date":"2025-05-29T16:51:18","date_gmt":"2025-05-29T15:51:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/nhli\/?p=336"},"modified":"2025-06-05T16:06:08","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T15:06:08","slug":"ai-driven-biotech-takes-centre-stage-at-inaugural-bioscience-futures-symposium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/nhli\/2025\/05\/29\/ai-driven-biotech-takes-centre-stage-at-inaugural-bioscience-futures-symposium\/","title":{"rendered":"AI-Driven Biotech Takes Centre Stage at Inaugural Bioscience Futures Symposium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Written by Tina Lavithi, MSc Bioscience Futures student 2024\/25<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" class=\"wp-image-337 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/nhli\/files\/2025\/05\/BF-Symposium_resize.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Student-led symposium showcases MSc Bioscience Futures programme and the next generation of biotech leaders.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Organised by the first <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/study\/courses\/postgraduate-taught\/bioscience-futures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MSc Bioscience Futures<\/a><\/strong> cohort as part of the <em>Bioscience Futures and Foresight<\/em> module on 11 March 2025, the inaugural Bioscience Futures Network Symposium at the Royal College of Science Building, Imperial marked the launch of a new cross-sector network aiming to connect bioscience research with industry, policy, and public health.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"805\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-340\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/nhli\/files\/2025\/05\/Innovating-for-Impact_Logo_resize.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With the theme \u201cSustainability and Resilience in Bioscience Futures\u201d focusing on \u201cInnovating for Impact: AI-Driven Biotech for a Healthier World\u201d, the symposium brought together 40+ attendees \u2013 including researchers and industry professionals from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/nhli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI)<\/a><\/strong>, NVIDIA, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to name a few. Featuring five sessions (both expert- and student-led), the symposium shed light on how AI can transform the future of biosciences.<\/p>\n<p>Supported by the NHLI, MSc Bioscience Futures students collaborated across Imperial, engaging with the Imperial Policy Forum, Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication, Centre for Environmental Policy, School of Public Health, and the Enterprise Lab to bring the symposium to life.<\/p>\n<p>Why does it matter? Rooted in Imperial\u2019s mission of Science for Humanity, the symposium highlighted the MSc Bioscience Futures programme\u2019s unique approach to postgraduate education. With 100% of attendees interested in future events, the Network, which will continue through future cohorts and alumni, is set to become a catalyst for impact at the interface of AI, health and society, fostering interconnectedness.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-339\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/nhli\/files\/2025\/05\/Panel_resize.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The student-led panel, voted \u201cmost impactful\u201d by 50% of attendees in the post-symposium evaluation, uncovered the intersection of ethics, equity and innovation following the evaluation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sustainability: The Golden Thread through MSc Bioscience Futures<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-338\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/nhli\/files\/2025\/05\/FOLAT_resize.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>From left: Junwon Hwang, Tina Lavithi, Anne Burke-Gaffney, Michael Weatherburn, Blerina Ahmetaj-Shala and Mark Pope at the Festival of Teaching and Learning 2025 at Imperial College London.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At the Festival of Teaching and Learning 2025, the session \u201cSustainability: The golden thread through the MSc Bioscience Futures\u201d showcased how sustainability is embedded throughout the programme\u2019s design and delivery.<\/p>\n<p>Course Co-Director Dr Anne Burke-Gaffney opened the session by introducing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/study\/courses\/postgraduate-taught\/bioscience-futures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>MSc Bioscience Futures: Communication, Innovation and Entrepreneurship<\/strong><\/a>, highlighting its commitment to sustainability as a core element.
