{"id":924,"date":"2019-05-01T12:34:13","date_gmt":"2019-05-01T11:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/openaccess\/?p=924"},"modified":"2019-05-01T12:50:28","modified_gmt":"2019-05-01T11:50:28","slug":"less-gold-more-green-research-councils-and-open-access-at-imperial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/openaccess\/2019\/05\/01\/less-gold-more-green-research-councils-and-open-access-at-imperial\/","title":{"rendered":"Less gold &amp; more green \u2013 Research Councils and Open Access at Imperial"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fcbkbttn_buttons_block\" id=\"fcbkbttn_left\"><div class=\"fcbkbttn_button\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/openaccess\/wp-content\/plugins\/facebook-button-plugin\/images\/standard-facebook-ico.png\" alt=\"Fb-Button\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><div class=\"fcbkbttn_like \"><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/openaccess\/2019\/05\/01\/less-gold-more-green-research-councils-and-open-access-at-imperial\/\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\" layout=\"standard\"  width=\"225px\" size=\"small\"><\/fb:like><\/div><\/div><p>In common with a number of other universities in receipt of Research Councils UK (RCUK\/UKRI**) funding for open access (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.openaccess.cam.ac.uk\/university-policies-and-guidance\/cambridge-funding-guidelines\">Cambridge<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/library\/open-access\/open-access-and-uk-research-councils-ukri\">UCL<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/2018\/03\/09\/rcuk-open-access-funding-update\/\">LSHTM<\/a>), we cannot pay for every single RCUK-funded output to be immediate open access. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/about\/leadership-and-strategy\/provost\/vice-provost-research\/vpagr\/\">Vice Provost\u2019s Advisory Group for Research<\/a> have therefore decided to restrict the use of the RCUK grant to only pay where:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>a. the publication output is in a fully open access title that appears in the Directory of Open Access Journals (<a href=\"https:\/\/doaj.org\/\">DOAJ<\/a>) or<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>b. the publication title does not provide a compliant \u201cgreen\u201d (self-archiving) open access route<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>RCUK funded authors can still expect financial support for open access for the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fully open access journals e.g. PLoS, BMC etc.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Hybrid\u2019 open access journals \u2013 but only when a compliant publisher \u201cgreen\u201d (self-archiving) open access route is unavailable or exceeds the individual research council embargo.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"288\" height=\"450\" class=\"wp-image-932 size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/openaccess\/files\/2019\/05\/Open_Access_logo_PLoS_white_green.svg_-288x450.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rather than paying for open access, if you are in receipt of funding from the UK research councils, you can comply by simply self-archiving (a REF2021 requirement already). Provided that the publisher\u2019s required embargo does not exceed the maximum permitted. The vast majority of publications are compliant via the self-archiving open access route and authors can check individual embargo periods of journals via <a href=\"http:\/\/sherpa.ac.uk\/romeo\/index.php\">Sherpa Romeo.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Funder Maximum permitted embargo<\/p>\n<p><strong>MRC 6 months<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>BBSRC 12 months<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>EPSRC 12 months<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>NERC 12 months<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>STFC 12 months<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ESRC 24 months<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is important to note that the choice of publication venue will not be compromised as we will pay when they exceed the permitted embargo.
