A new PPI methodology \u2013 a hybrid between a science caf\u00e9 and a more typical PPI workshop \u2013 it was designed by five Imperial research centres in partnership with Patient and Public members.<\/p>\n<p>Our aim was simple: to give the public a flavour of PPI by contributing to real-life research projects. As well as getting fresh public input into some projects, we wanted to try something novel in PPI and to have some fun.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"4608\" height=\"3456\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-513\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/perc\/files\/2018\/05\/new-DSCN3463-002.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why a caf\u00e9?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite their modern association with tax-dodging and precarious labour, coffee houses have for centuries been associated with free discussion and the exchange of ideas. We wanted to set up a caf\u00e9 that would make for a welcoming environment in which people felt able to discuss research openly. Caf\u00e9s also have a degree of universality, meaning that in future we could apply the concept across different sites and diverse audiences.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Our wonderful baristas brewing up some public research ideas <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PPI?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PPI<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ImpFest?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ImpFest<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5E84j3fjra\">pic.twitter.com\/5E84j3fjra<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Imperial PERC (@Imperial_PERC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Imperial_PERC\/status\/990206390860943360?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 28, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><strong>How does the PPI Caf\u00e9 work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The caf\u00e9 \u201cbaristas\u201d \u2013 both researchers and public partners \u2013 gave the public a brief overview of PPI before inviting them to join a table in the caf\u00e9. A facilitator would introduce the public to the background and aims of a real-life Imperial research project. The public were then posed questions the researcher wanted feedback on and invited to make suggestions on how to improve the study.<\/p>\n<p>In conversation with researchers, our caf\u00e9 visitors filled up our coffee jars full of comments and suggestions. Public input was welcomed across the research cycle, from study design to implementing. Our research teams are now analysing the comments and looking at how these can be incorporated into their studies.<\/p>\n<p>Research questions included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Influences of a computerised diagnostic decision aids on GPs\u2019 thinking<\/li>\n<li>The art and science of food<\/li>\n<li>Parental consent for teenagers\u2019 involvement in mobile phone research<\/li>\n<li>The value of remote diagnosis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What worked?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Visitors \u2013 <\/strong>Visitors to the caf\u00e9 seemed to both enjoy it and learn something. 91% of respondents enjoyed the caf\u00e9 \u2018a great deal\u2019 or \u2018a lot\u2019; 84% of respondents learnt \u2018a great deal\u2019 or \u2018a lot\u2019.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Insights \u2013 <\/strong>We are still collating the public ideas and insights, but the format seemed to allow for useful insights from the public for our research. We are now looking at how we can improve the process to optimise insights.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Informal atmosphere <\/strong>\u2013 The \u201cvibe\u201d of the caf\u00e9 allowed visitors to talk openly and freely. It was a far more relaxed environment than a focus group or workshop so may be more appealing to audiences unfamiliar with PPI.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lay members <\/strong>\u2013 The presence of our lay members was essential for creating an atmosphere of informality and making PPI feel accessible and inclusive. It was important to practice what we preach, with the caf\u00e9 a true partnership between researchers and the public.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Uniting PPI across Imperial <\/strong>\u2013 It brought together research teams from across Imperial who are doing PPI \u2013 we have lots to learn from each other!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What can be improved?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Communication<\/strong> \u2013 We could be clearer in our definitions both of (a) what PPI is as people approach the caf\u00e9, perhaps a sign with greater clarity such as \u201cyour voice in research\u201d and (b) introducing the research projects.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Festival practicalities<\/strong> \u2013 Doing it in an actual coffee shop in future should give us more space and prove a less chaotic environment!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Researcher involvement<\/strong> \u2013 It is crucial to have the researchers themselves attending and facilitating, rather than outsourcing their PPI activities to PPI practitioners. This would also help with communicating research projects.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Planning<\/strong> \u2013 It was the first time some of these research centres had worked together, so a clearer division of labour would have helped us, utilising the cloud to make sharing information simpler.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Capturing insights<\/strong> \u2013 A scribe to ensure that we are capturing all insights from the public, allowing the facilitators more time to focus on stimulating discussion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Decoration<\/strong> \u2013 Actual coffee (!) and more research-focused paraphernalia for the shelves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"848\" height=\"846\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-514\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/perc\/files\/2018\/05\/ppi-cafe.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you brew up a PPI caf\u00e9 in 5 steps?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the coming months we hope to do more work on developing the PPI Caf\u00e9, perhaps even creating a \u201cHow to\u201d guide to share with the participatory research community. In the meantime, for those of you who would like to run one, here are five simple steps to get you started:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Find some researchers who want to involve the public in their research.<\/li>\n<li>Ask your friends, family and colleagues for all the coffee-related paraphernalia they can find. Empty coffee jars, bags of coffee beans, and recyclable cups are all essential.<\/li>\n<li>This is the crucial step \u2013 work out how the public can contribute to your study. What do you want them to help you with? It could be priority-setting, study-design, recruitment, or dissemination. It could be something else, just make sure you define this clearly at the outset.<\/li>\n<li>Set up at a suitable venue \u2013 a science festival, a community venue, or even your local independent coffee retailer.<\/li>\n<li>Talk to the public about your research. Ask them for their ideas and insights, capturing what they say by writing it down and putting them in coffee jars. Keep researchers and the public well-caffeinated.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>What is the future of the caf\u00e9? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We hope to take the caf\u00e9 on tour to locations across London, fuelling caffeinated discussions about research.
