{"id":143,"date":"2019-06-10T07:01:33","date_gmt":"2019-06-10T07:01:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/research-software-engineering\/?p=143"},"modified":"2019-11-22T13:58:13","modified_gmt":"2019-11-22T13:58:13","slug":"derse19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/research-software-engineering\/2019\/06\/10\/derse19\/","title":{"rendered":"deRSE19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first German national RSE conference took place in Potsdam on 4th-6th June 2019 with 187 attendees. <a href=\"https:\/\/derse19.uni-jena.de\/derse19\/\">deRSE19 <\/a>was a really vibrant, welcoming and well-organised event in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alexhillphd\/status\/1137695593994817537\">great location<\/a> and had a diverse agenda, encouraging participants from across Europe to share experiences of software engineering in research.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_146\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-146\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"wp-image-146 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/research-software-engineering\/files\/2019\/06\/IMG_20190605_1651292-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"deRSE19 group photo\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-146\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">deRSE19 aerial group photo (CC-BY Antonia Cozacu, Jan Philipp Dietrich, de-RSE e.V.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In terms of presentations Imperial College was the best-represented institution from outside Germany, with the following speakers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jeremy Cohen (EPSRC RSE Fellow, Department of Computing) who presented a talk on <a href=\"https:\/\/derse19.uni-jena.de\/derse19\/talk\/KWUFQW\/\">building research software communities<\/a> and a poster about <a href=\"https:\/\/rslondon.ac.uk\/\">RSLondon<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Alex Hill (Senior Web Application Developer, Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology) who spoke about <a href=\"https:\/\/derse19.uni-jena.de\/derse19\/talk\/TF8EKE\/\">the challenges of conducting constructive code reviews<\/a>, particularly in a research setting.<\/li>\n<li>Mark Woodbridge (RSE Team Lead, Research Computing Service) who gave a talk on <a href=\"https:\/\/derse19.uni-jena.de\/derse19\/talk\/NJSQBN\/\">RSE 2.0<\/a>, reflecting on progress in Research Software Engineering and how it may develop in the near future.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many thanks to all the event <a href=\"https:\/\/www.de-rse.org\/en\/conf2019\/contact.html\">organisers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.de-rse.org\/en\/conf2019\/index.html\">sponsors<\/a> for giving us the opportunity to present.<\/p>\n<p>Also during the conference a keynote on <a href=\"https:\/\/derse19.uni-jena.de\/derse19\/talk\/ZD3B3K\/\">RSE collaboration<\/a> was delivered by Alys Brett, chair of the newly established Society of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.society-rse.org\/\">Research Software Engineering<\/a> and head of the Software Engineering Group at the UKAEA. UK RSEs also attended deRSE19 from the Software Sustainability Institute, the University of Westminster, and the University of Southampton.
