Well, I\u2019m sorry to tell you you\u2019re not quite right \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">L<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">ast year, my revision\/study time was absolutely enjoyable and I did <strong>not<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">have a single day when I studied non-stop until late evening.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">cut sleep <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">at all.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">feel very stressed at any point of my exam season.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">W<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">hen I received my <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">results<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">I got <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">84.5%<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"> overall and was featured in the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">departmental<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: large\">Dean\u2019s list (top 10% students from my cohort).<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">Magic? No, it\u2019s my learning strategy I want to share with you, so please read on!<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">Th<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">e approach<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"> is summarised in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">8<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"> points.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"justify\">Choose a subject you&#8217;re passionate about<\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">Even though this point isn\u2019t strictly related to an exam season, I can<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">no<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">t stress enough how important it is. If you\u2019re truly passionate about your course, the odds are that this will be your natural motivation to study. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">Also, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">y<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">our learning will be a pure pleasure thanks to that<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">Trust me, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">I\u2019m exactly in this situation \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"justify\">Do your best in coursework<\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">Don\u2019t underestimate the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">significance<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"> of any coursework you have to hand in. It doesn\u2019t matter whether it is 5%, 15% or 40% of your module grade. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">It helps you understand the material and t<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">he better you do, the higher your overall score will be along with the safety margin in case your exams go badly. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">Even i<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">f your compulsory coursework isn\u2019t graded, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">this tip is still worth looking at<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">. You want to get some prizes or good references for internships, don\u2019t you? \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"justify\">Start exam preparation early<\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">I don\u2019t think there\u2019s anything more to add here. Leaving things to the last minute leads to countless tiring hours spent on cramming&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"justify\">Plan your revision in detail<\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">This is especially good when you have a lot to revise. Think of what examinable material every module consists of, pick specific days you\u2019re going to spend on studying and plan what to do then. For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">20 March: study Discrete Structures, Graphs and Algorithms<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">21 March: study Reasoning about Programs<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">22 March: free time<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">23 March: study Mathematical Methods, Hardware, Architecture<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">You can also make more detailed plans for every module (e.g. attempt past papers, do tutorial exercises, go through lecture notes, \u2026), so when you see \u201cstudy Discrete Structures\u201d, you can open your plan for Discrete Structures revision and check specifically what to do there.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"justify\">Set reasonable goals<\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">Be realistic and r<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">emember that grading standards are different at university. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">It\u2019s no longer school where you have to get 90-100% scores for the highest grade. Here, 70% is a threshold for the highest grade (a First) and 60% is a threshold for the second highest grade (2:1). Depending on your capabilities, you can have lower or higher goals<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"><u>And regardless of the targets you set, always <\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"><u>do <\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"><u>your best!<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"justify\">Consider practical importance of the material you&#8217;re revising<\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">It\u2019s easier to stay motivated and enjoy learning if you can relate what you revise to the real world. For example, when studying machine learning, try realising that you can talk to Alexa or Siri thanks to that.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"justify\">Take regular breaks and sleep well<\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">Don\u2019t ignore this point! If you\u2019re tired <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">or don\u2019t get enough sleep<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">, your learning capacity decreases <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">and<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: large\">you\u2019re more likely to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">make mistakes and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">get distracted. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">It\u2019s also difficult to stay concentrated for longer time.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"> You\u2019ll <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">definitely <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">achieve more by <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">taking breaks <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">and not cutting sleep<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">, even if it means spending a bit less time <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">on <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">revising. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">The break duration should be reasonable of course, so you don\u2019t actually relax more than study :<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">Also, I\u2019m not a big fan of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">very <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">last-minute revision. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">In my opinion,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"> t<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">he <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">mind should be as <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">relaxed<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"> as possible when w<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">e<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"> enter an exam room. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">Because of that, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">I a<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">void<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"> intellectually-engaging activities on an exam day until the exam itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"justify\">Treat exams as nothing else than a pure learning experience or an exciting challenge<\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">For me, it\u2019s the best way of tackling exam stress. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">When I have tutorial sessions, what do I do? <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">Answer <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">(sometimes challenging) <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">questions <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">in order <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">understand <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">the material <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">better<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">. And w<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">hat do I do in exams? Exactly the same thing. So why not treat exams just as extra tutorials? <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">Some aspects are obviously different in exams, but it\u2019s how we see stuff in our brain that matters.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"> Rather than saying \u201cIt\u2019s a test\u201d, say \u201cIt\u2019s a<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">n extra tutorial\u201d to yourself. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">I recommend experimenting <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">here<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">, because there are many different ways of imagining it and the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">example described here <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">might not necessarily work best for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">I <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">hope you find these tips useful.
