A PhD provides training\u00a0to become an independent researcher, which personally for me is a skill necessary for the career\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0like to pursue.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond technical training, I was drawn to the research freedom and creativity that academia allows. My love for science can only stretch so far if\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0working on topics I am disinterested in and\u00a0running experiments I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0care for, so I picked a PhD project that I was\u00a0definitely interested\u00a0in finding out more about. The freedom of taking my project to where I want it to be is also a big plus for me and is\u00a0one of my favourite aspects of doing a PhD.<\/p>\n<p>So, as simple as it may sound,\u00a0I\u2019d suggest\u00a0making\u00a0a pros and cons list\u00a0for doing a PhD before you start your search to make sure it\u2019s 100% something you want to do\u00a0\u2013\u00a0what do you think a PhD will provide for you?<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The PhD application process<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The application process typically involves several stages:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Search for a PhD<\/li>\n<li>Initial application submission<\/li>\n<li>Shortlisting<\/li>\n<li>Interview(s)<\/li>\n<li>Conditional or formal offers<\/li>\n<li>Funding decisions<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Interviews often focus on\u00a0your\u00a0motivations for applying,\u00a0your\u00a0understanding of the project,\u00a0what\u00a0prior research experience\u00a0you have\u00a0and how you approach challenges.\u00a0When I was preparing for interviews, I revisited my application, read relevant\u00a0literature\u00a0and reflected on my experiences so I could discuss them clearly and confidently in interviews.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Finding a PhD<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Finding a project first requires you to understand what kind of research excites you, what working environment you thrive in\u00a0and what skills you\u00a0want to gain from the PhD.\u00a0Some tools\u00a0you can use for finding your PhD are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>University websites, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/study\/apply\/postgraduate-doctoral\/application-process\/choose-course\/phd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/study\/apply\/postgraduate-doctoral\/application-process\/choose-course\/phd\/ (Opens in a new Window)\">Imperial&#8217;s<\/a> \u2013 look for specific department webpages where they list\u00a0all\u00a0their\u00a0open\u00a0PhD opportunities<\/li>\n<li>Centralised PhD portals and job boards such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findaphd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"https:\/\/www.findaphd.com\/ (Opens in a new Window)\">FindAPhD\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Research group and supervisor webpages<\/li>\n<li>Academic networks and recommendations from lecturers or supervisors<\/li>\n<li>Funding body and doctoral training centre websites<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My application process might slightly differ from yours.\u00a0For my PhD,\u00a0I received funding from my home country so I simply needed to find a research group that worked on a project I was interested in. To do this, I\u00a0searched through the\u00a0Imperial website, found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/research-and-innovation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/research-and-innovation\/ (Opens in a new Window)\">lists of researchers and research groups at Imperial<\/a>, read descriptions of their research and explored their research output.<\/p>\n<p>As I was already a\u00a0Master\u2019s\u00a0student at Imperial while searching for PhDs,\u00a0I also spoke to my lecturers on what research groups they thought would make a good fit for me. I found my current project supervisor from a list of research groups my MSc course leader had sent me.<\/p>\n<p>The key is to speak to EVERYONE and try to get as much input as possible.\u00a0I personally know a fellow PhD\u00a0student who found their\u00a0project\u00a0through speaking to a stranger in a pub who connected them with their current\u00a0principal investigator (PI)\u00a0and PhD supervisor.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Funding your PhD<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If\u00a0you&#8217;re\u00a0not self-funded,\u00a0there are lots of other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/study\/fees-and-funding\/postgraduate-doctoral\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/study\/fees-and-funding\/postgraduate-doctoral\/ (Opens in a new Window)\">PhD funding options<\/a>\u00a0you can\u00a0look into, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fully-funded\u00a0PhD projects advertised by supervisors<\/li>\n<li>UK Research Council studentships<\/li>\n<li>External funding from research councils,\u00a0charities\u00a0and industry<\/li>\n<li>Scholarships and fellowships for specific backgrounds or research areas<\/li>\n<li>Grants and loans<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Understanding funding deadlines and eligibility criteria early on is crucial as these often differ from project application deadlines.<\/p>\n<p>Imperial offers a wide range of funding schemes\u00a0you can explore, but many of these are highly competitive, so aligning your application with the funder\u2019s remit and priorities is essential.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Doing a\u00a0PhD after a\u00a0Master\u2019s\u00a0at Imperial<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>For students already studying at Imperial,\u00a0continuing\u00a0to a PhD offers several advantages.\u00a0You\u2019ll\u00a0already be\u00a0familiar with the academic environment,\u00a0expectations\u00a0and research culture, and you\u00a0may already have\u00a0established\u00a0relationships with potential supervisors. In my case, this made it easier to\u00a0identify\u00a0research groups that align with my interests and\u00a0get support from lecturers who are well-informed on potential research groups.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Writing\u00a0a\u00a0PhD application<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Most PhD applications required some combination of the following documents:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>CV<\/li>\n<li>Cover letter or personal statement<\/li>\n<li>Academic transcripts<\/li>\n<li>References<\/li>\n<li>Research proposal (for some projects)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s\u00a0important to be detailed and specific in your application. Rather than simply listing skills, I backed up my statements with concrete examples.\u00a0Remember that no one expects you to have all the skills required to complete a PhD at the application stage\u00a0\u2013\u00a0if that were the case, you\u2019d already be\u00a0in\u00a0a postdoctoral position\u00a0\u2013 so just talk about the relevant experiences you\u2019ve\u00a0had so far and\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0how they\u2019ll help you progress and succeed in\u00a0the\u00a0PhD.<\/p>\n<p>A strong application clearly explains:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why the\u00a0topic interests you<\/li>\n<li>How\u00a0the project\u00a0fits into your long-term goals<\/li>\n<li>Why\u00a0you want to work with the\u00a0supervisor and research group<\/li>\n<li>Why\u00a0you want to do a PhD in this specific\u00a0institution<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Supervisors have different mentoring styles, and students have different learning needs. Showing that you have thought carefully about this fit\u00a0demonstrates\u00a0maturity and self-awareness.<\/p>\n<p>Using scientific literature is\u00a0a good way\u00a0to show your thought process. Referencing key papers, specifically work published by the research group or supervisor,\u00a0shows genuine engagement with the research and helps your application stand out.
