I graduated without an internship or a placement, told myself it was a problem with my approach to applications, and it wasn&#8217;t until I was here, deep into the process, that the penny finally dropped: most hiring managers had already formed a mental shortlist of people with internship experience, and I wasn&#8217;t on it.<\/p>\n<p>I had society leadership, volunteering and academic projects that gave me genuine transferable skills, but no office floor work experience, and that gap is harder to close than anyone tells you upfront. Coming to Imperial gave me the chance to rebuild that foundation, and the resources here have genuinely changed how I approach\u00a0my\u00a0search\u00a0for internships and graduate roles.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Stop scrolling all platforms \u2013\u00a0be intentional in your search<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Open LinkedIn on any given\u00a0Tuesday and your feed\u00a0might be\u00a0full of people announcing Goldman internships, Big Four offers, startups they built at 20, financial investments they&#8217;ve already made and carefully polished personal brand portfolios that make you quietly wonder what you&#8217;ve been doing with your time. Open YouTube and\u00a0someone&#8217;s\u00a0telling you that without a GitHub profile, a financial investment tracker and a fully optimised personal brand,\u00a0you&#8217;re\u00a0already behind. The pressure to have everything sorted, your CV, your LinkedIn, your digital\u00a0presence\u00a0and\u00a0your side projects is relentless, and it can make you feel like everyone else quietly figured something out that you missed\u00a0\u2013 but\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0not true!<\/p>\n<p>What\u00a0I&#8217;ve\u00a0learnt throughout\u00a0this process is that a simpler rhythm works better\u00a0\u2013\u00a0search the right platforms, apply with genuine care,\u00a0send\u00a0follow\u00a0ups\u00a0and\u00a0repeat.\u00a0In the age of AI, you can optimise a strong CV for a specific job description\u00a0quickly too, so you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0need to\u00a0spend days agonising over one application\u00a0and instead use\u00a0that energy to\u00a0create and\u00a0submit\u00a0lots of quality applications.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Where to\u00a0actually look\u00a0and what each platform is genuinely for<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Not all job platforms are built the\u00a0same and\u00a0using the wrong one for what\u00a0you&#8217;re\u00a0looking for wastes time you simply\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0have, especially\u00a0during\u00a0a\u00a0Master\u2019s.\u00a0Here&#8217;s\u00a0an honest breakdown\u00a0of the platforms\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0used and what I used them for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/imperial-csm.symplicity.com\/students\/?signin_tab=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"https:\/\/imperial-csm.symplicity.com\/students\/?signin_tab=0 (Opens in a new Window)\">Imperial\u00a0Symplicity<\/a>\u00a0(for Imperial Business School students and alumni)\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the first place I check, because it surfaces roles posted specifically for Imperial students like internships, graduate programmes\u00a0and networking events that simply\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0appear anywhere else. Prospects\u00a0gives\u00a0you detailed breakdowns of what each role\u00a0actually involves, which is useful when\u00a0you&#8217;re\u00a0still figuring out which direction to go in.\u00a0GoinGlobal\u00a0is particularly helpful for understanding international hiring and sponsorship landscapes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Handshake\u00a0\u2013\u00a0skews toward internships and entry-level opportunities and is particularly active for students still in their studies.\u00a0So\u00a0if\u00a0you&#8217;re\u00a0looking for something to run alongside your\u00a0Master\u2019s, this is where to start.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>LinkedIn\u00a0\u2013\u00a0best for two things: networking and researching companies\u00a0you&#8217;re\u00a0already targeting. As a job board\u00a0it&#8217;s\u00a0noisy and competitive, but as a tool for reaching people in roles you want and understanding what different career paths\u00a0actually look\u00a0like\u00a0on a day-to-day basis,\u00a0there&#8217;s\u00a0nowhere\u00a0better.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Company websites\u00a0\u2013 if you know you want to work for a specific\u00a0organisation, you can check their\u00a0company\u00a0website where\u00a0they\u2018ll post\u00a0opportunities to join them for\u00a0spring weeks, insight\u00a0programmes\u00a0and off-cycle internships. This is especially true for\u00a0banks,\u00a0consultancies\u00a0and large tech firms because\u00a0they\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0always\u00a0add\u00a0these kinds of\u00a0opportunities to third\u00a0party boards.\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0also recommend\u00a0checking\u00a0the organisation\u2019s\u00a0early careers page regularly and set a reminder\u00a0of any\u00a0application\u00a0deadlines, because many of these programmes open and fill within weeks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The\u00a0reality of getting a work visa as an international student in the UK<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If\u00a0you&#8217;re\u00a0an international student targeting sponsored roles, your search is fundamentally different from your domestic peers&#8217;.\u00a0You&#8217;re\u00a0filtering for roles you want, while also filtering for the\u00a0roughly 30%\u00a0of UK employers who hold a skilled worker sponsor licence\u00a0(you can verify\u00a0these employers\u00a0on the UK government&#8217;s official register of licensed sponsors before spending\u00a0time on an\u00a0application).\u00a0Also, many\u00a0entry level listings\u00a0that might look relevant\u00a0will also\u00a0unfortunately\u00a0be ruled out if they\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0meet the threshold for a skilled worker visa.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s\u00a0also a harder thing to sit with: you are, on paper, a more expensive hire.\u00a0Sponsorship costs employers thousands in fees and admin, which means there is an\u00a0additional\u00a0cost attached to choosing you. The experience itself\u00a0didn&#8217;t\u00a0change only the language used to describe it, and that distinction is where most students quietly lose points.<\/p>\n<p>At Imperial, academic projects have given me work I can speak to confidently in interviews,\u00a0including a data warehousing build for Stella McCartney and an economic resilience analysis across 25+ World Bank datasets. These are structured, deliverable-driven pieces of work done under real constraints and they should be presented as such.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Networking with industry professionals: for everyone who finds it quietly mortifying<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Networking as a\u00a022-year-old\u00a0can feel genuinely awkward.\u00a0There&#8217;s\u00a0the worry of what\u00a0you&#8217;d\u00a0even say, the fear of coming across as transactional and the specific discomfort of messaging someone senior on LinkedIn and wondering if\u00a0they&#8217;ll\u00a0find it strange. The honest answer is that most people\u00a0won&#8217;t,\u00a0and even if they\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0reply, the act of reaching out forces you to clarify your own thinking about why you want to be in a particular field.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve\u00a0sent a lot of cold LinkedIn messages to\u00a0hiring\u00a0managers and people in roles\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0targeting. Some\u00a0replied,\u00a0most\u00a0didn&#8217;t, and none led directly to an interview at that specific company. However,\u00a0several led to conversations that genuinely shifted how I understood certain industries, and that showed up in how I positioned myself in later applications.
