When you move to London as an international student,\u00a0the first\u00a0thing\u00a0you might realise is\u00a0that\u00a0expenses\u00a0can add up fast, from rent\u00a0and\u00a0groceries\u00a0to\u00a0travel\u00a0and\u00a0tuition.\u00a0The second thing that hits you is how different the professional culture feels. You suddenly realise that the way people work, communicate\u00a0and even perceive creativity is completely new\u00a0to how they were back home.<\/p>\n

For me, part-time jobs became the bridge between these two worlds. They helped me manage my finances\u00a0and\u00a0at the same time\u00a0understand how the UK market functions, especially coming from a marketing and customer experience point of view. My first (and favourite) role was as a\u00a0MORA\u00a0Content Creator, working with the central marketing team at Imperial.\u00a0It felt surreal to be paid to create content for one of the world\u2019s leading universities\u00a0and the experience\u00a0positively shaped my entire year.<\/p>\n

Becoming a MORA Content Creator<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Supporting\u00a0the team and creating\u00a0content seen by more than\u00a0700,000 people\u00a0across Imperial\u2019s social media channels made working with the MORA team nothing short of a dream. It wasn’t just about filming\u00a0or writing \u2013\u00a0it was about storytelling\u00a0and sharing the student experience, learning how large institutions communicate\u00a0and understanding the kind of tone and authenticity that resonates with diverse audiences.<\/p>\n

Through this role, I got opportunities I never imagined as a student, such as\u00a0interviewing public figures\u00a0like\u00a0Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. None of this would have happened if I hadn’t said \u201cyes\u201d to that small opportunity when it first came my way. The MORA team is warm, encouraging and gives you the creative space to experiment. If you love storytelling\u00a0and want to be involved in\u00a0interesting\u00a0content projects,\u00a0I believe this is one of the best part-time roles you can find at Imperial.<\/p>\n

Finding part-time opportunities<\/strong><\/h4>\n

There are plenty of ways to find part-time work while studying at Imperial. I found mine through\u00a0Imperial\u2019s internal job boards\u00a0on\u00a0JobsLive<\/a>,\u00a0LinkedIn, and\u00a0career fairs\u00a0during Welcome Week. The key is to keep your CV tailored to the type of role\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0applying for and to show enthusiasm.\u00a0Imperial\u2019s\u00a0Careers Service<\/a>\u00a0can help you work on your CV, conduct practice interviews and generally support you with finding jobs.\u00a0Also,\u00a0keep in mind that\u00a0most part-time employers\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0just looking for experience, but they\u00a0also\u00a0want someone reliable,\u00a0proactive\u00a0and\u00a0friendly.<\/p>\n

Balancing work and study<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Balancing work and classes takes planning. I always made sure to take on shifts only when my class schedule was lighter that week. Remember that your degree is the main priority, but a well-chosen part-time job can complement your studies rather than distract from them. My marketing coursework for instance felt more meaningful when I could see how those concepts played out in real-world jobs.<\/p>\n

Exploring different part-time jobs<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Over the course of my Master\u2019s, I wore many hats\u00a0and tried out different jobs\u00a0like a\u00a0waiter, event manager, barista and even a bartender. Each role taught me something unique. Working in hospitality helped me understand what real customer service means, learning patience, teamwork and how to stay calm when\u00a0everything\u00a0seems\u00a0to be\u00a0happening\u00a0all at once. Those lessons and skills have stayed with me far beyond the caf\u00e9 counter.<\/p>\n

Financial independence and visa rules<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Financially, my part-time roles were a lifesaver. I managed to cover my\u00a0rent, travel and living expenses\u00a0through the work I did and even saved a bit. As an international student, I was allowed to work\u00a0up to 20 hours per week during term time\u00a0and\u00a0full-time during holidays,\u00a0which was more than enough to balance income and rest.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0crucial to follow your visa\u00a0regulations strictly, because\u00a0exceeding the working hours limit can affect your visa status. Imperial\u00a0provides\u00a0clear guidance about this, and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0always wise to double-check your conditions before accepting any job.<\/p>\n

Final thoughts<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Looking back, my part-time journey at Imperial was more than just a way to earn money. It was about building confidence, learning professionalism in a new\u00a0culture\u00a0and connecting with people from all\u00a0walks of life. Whether you’re brewing coffee or creating digital campaigns, every role teaches you something valuable\u00a0which you can take forwards into the future.<\/p>\n
