Some of these companies like to visit the South Kensington Campus and give introductory lectures explaining the company’s dynamics and application process.

Attending these careers events can help you better understand and widen your perspective on the job market. The talks usually have alumni attend as guest speakers, sharing their personal journeys and advice on how to apply for the company in question.

Aside from these talks, the Careers Service also holds an annual Department of Mathematics speed networking event. The event is free to attend for all students and alumni, although Maths students are given booking priority. During the event, students will form groups of five and sit at a table with a delegation of a guest company. After five minutes, a bell will ring and the students will rotate to the next table. By the end of the night, you get the chance to go back and talk with the recruiters from the companies you’re most interested in.

I love these careers events as they help me explore new options and discover opportunities to collaborate with interesting small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

CVs and cover letter advice

Of all the services available through the Careers Service, I utilise the CV and cover letter support appointments the most. In these 25-minute appointments, you’ll meet with an expert recruiter and careers advisor from Imperial who will read through your CV or cover letter and point out ways that you can improve them.

The first time I used the service was to polish my CV which had been unused for four years since my first internship. I wanted to create a good CV that I could send to prospective clients to showcase my product management skills. During the first meeting, I was rightfully told my CV did not accurately reflect my skills. Also, the double-column format I used made it difficult to talk about the experience and duties I held during my previous role.

I was told to re-write the CV following Imperial’s template. Reading the advice from Imperial and seeing examples of other CVs for various uses and industries, I learned what recruiters are looking for in a good CV and how to present my achievements in a way that attracted attention.

My first attempt at rewriting my CV with the Imperial template and advice from the Careers Service still needed a lot of work – so it’s great that you can book up to three consecutive appointments with the Careers Service within a 90-day period as it meant I was able to create and polish my CV with support from the Careers Service in a week.

My future career goals

At the moment, I’m aiming to stay in the UK for two more years so am currently looking for roles that will give me a stable source of income. My time studying at Imperial has made me fall in love with the organisation and now I hope to find a role within the university to continue my journey in London.

My bigger vision is to work in creating and managing the ecosystems in which innovation and creation occur at Imperial. My start-up project, RE:GEN, reflects my philosophy of creating spaces in which ambitious individuals have access to a range of tools and resources that they can access to achieve their dreams.

I’d like to continue developing the space in the garden chaplaincy into a garden think tank, where sustainable conversations about the future can happen. I’m also interested in being part of Imperial’s ambitious WestTech Corridor programme that aims to establish Imperial as the leading hub for British deep-tech startups.

I know that the Careers Service will be instrumental in supporting me to reach these career goals, so I’d definitely recommend having a look at all the careers resources and support that are available to you as an Imperial student if you need some advice for landing your dream role in the future!

Written by Emilio (Spain), MSc Applied Mathematics Imperial’s student support extends beyond academics – the university also offers a comprehensive Careers Service, available to all students from the day they start.
