{"id":1681,"date":"2016-01-14T10:41:09","date_gmt":"2016-01-14T10:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/surgeryandcancer\/?p=1681"},"modified":"2016-01-14T10:48:41","modified_gmt":"2016-01-14T10:48:41","slug":"president-of-royal-college-of-surgeons-gives-athena-swan-lecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/surgeryandcancer\/2016\/01\/14\/president-of-royal-college-of-surgeons-gives-athena-swan-lecture\/","title":{"rendered":"President of Royal College of Surgeons gives Athena SWAN Lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fcbkbttn_buttons_block\" id=\"fcbkbttn_left\"><div class=\"fcbkbttn_button\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/surgeryandcancer\/wp-content\/plugins\/facebook-button-plugin\/images\/standard-facebook-ico.png\" alt=\"Fb-Button\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><div class=\"fcbkbttn_like \"><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/surgeryandcancer\/2016\/01\/14\/president-of-royal-college-of-surgeons-gives-athena-swan-lecture\/\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\" layout=\"standard\"  width=\"225px\" size=\"small\"><\/fb:like><\/div><\/div><p>The Department of Surgery and Cancer hosted their first Athena SWAN Lecture on the 2nd December 2015 with guest speaker Ms Clare Marx, first female President of the Royal College of Surgeons.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/surgeryandcancer\/2016\/01\/14\/president-of-royal-college-of-surgeons-gives-athena-swan-lecture\/cvtobqbw4aantto\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1688\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1688\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/surgeryandcancer\/files\/2016\/01\/CVTOBQbW4AANtto.jpg\" alt=\"CVTOBQbW4AANtto\" \/><\/a>Ms Marx gave an inspirational lecture\u00a0entitled\u00a0<em>All changed, changed utterly<\/em>, providing a fascinating insight into the history of women in surgery and her\u00a0career journey as a surgeon, as\u00a0the first female trauma and orthopaedic surgeon trainee in London in 1981, then the first female\u00a0surgeon in East Anglia in 1993.\u00a0She also spoke of the work the Royal College of Surgeons is doing with addressing the lack of female surgeons nationally, including the development of a new curriculum which will impact on both undergraduate and postgraduate training.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0lecture attracted a diverse audience,\u00a0including junior doctors, 6th form students as well as Imperial staff and members of the public, which resulted in a lively debate following on from topics raised in the lecture\u00a0and provided a fantastic platform\u00a0for the junior medics and students to ask questions relevant to their concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Marx highlighted the need for leadership from the top and the need for mentoring and support if we are to enhance gender equality of women in surgery and across the board.
