href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.nhs.uk\/research\/research-facilities\/women-health-research-centre\">Women\u2019s Health Research Centre <\/a>facilitated a \u2018Discover and Do\u2019 table on the schools day of Imperial Festival, Friday May 5th.\u00a0 Showcasing the combined fields of clinical research and clinical midwifery practice, we offered Year 5 students several hands-on activities which they took on with inspiring enthusiasm.\u00a0 That May 5<sup>th<\/sup> also celebrated International Day of the Midwife was an added bonus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/surgeryandcancer\/2017\/05\/23\/baby-bubbles-and-the-great-pipette-challenge\/image-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2135\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"457\" height=\"353\" class=\"wp-image-2135 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/surgeryandcancer\/files\/2017\/05\/Image-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>The \u2018Baby Bubbles\u2019 activity at our stand invited students to explore the mysteries of the womb by using their so-called \u2018midwife detective skills\u2019 of sight and touch.\u00a0\u00a0 Research Midwives Rachel Akers and Malko Adan facilitated gentle probing hands over miniature amniotic water balloon sacs each with a singleton, twin or triplet jelly baby pregnancy.\u00a0\u00a0 Like a midwife using her core skill of abdominal palpation, students practised \u201cseeing with their hands\u201d.\u00a0 The amniotic sac water balloons provoked much intrigue and discussion as young midwives of the future discovered the excitement of a multiple pregnancy. \u00a0Amazingly, despite the tactile appeal of the \u2018baby bubbles\u2019, we had only one rupture of membranes on the day!<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile at the other end of the table classmates paired off to have a go in the \u2018Great Pipette Challenge\u2019.\u00a0 Lab technicians Ramona Mannino and Maria Arianoglou challenged participants to a laboratory skills race transferring tiny volumes of different fluids to a beaker.\u00a0Some of the girls decked in full lab coat, goggles and gloves mused about the possibility of their future careers in laboratory science.\u00a0 \u00a0Our Lady of Victories Primary School won overall on the day and was sent a prize-winning lab coat for their class.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/surgeryandcancer\/2017\/05\/23\/baby-bubbles-and-the-great-pipette-challenge\/imperial-festival-2-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2136\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"610\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2136 \" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/surgeryandcancer\/files\/2017\/05\/Imperial-Festival-2-1024x610.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>The nine and ten year old students additionally had the opportunity to explore a life-sized pregnancy torso and the uterine environment with Research Midwife Tina Prendeville.\u00a0 One precocious student queried, \u201c\u2026Miss, you mentioned that the umbilical cord transfers nutrients from the mother to the baby.\u00a0 Does that mean the mother isn\u2019t left with enough?\u201d\u00a0 We were floored by their knowledge and delighted by their unabashed enthusiasm.\u00a0 Finally, before each group moved to the next stand, pupils were invited to use further fine motor skills tasked with grabbing a single jelly bean from a large pot using only a pair of lab tweezers.\u00a0 No small task without fingers!\u00a0 One dexterous tweezer-handler declared it was \u201c\u2026his lucky day!\u201d\u00a0 There\u2019s no doubt it was a great day for us too!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alison Perry &#8211; Research Midwife at the <a
