{"id":2241,"date":"2017-03-08T11:01:10","date_gmt":"2017-03-08T11:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sustainablegasinstitute.org\/?p=2241"},"modified":"2017-03-08T11:01:10","modified_gmt":"2017-03-08T11:01:10","slug":"woman-from-imperial-college-are-finding-innovative-energy-solutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/sustainable-gas-institute\/2017\/03\/08\/woman-from-imperial-college-are-finding-innovative-energy-solutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Women from Imperial College are finding innovative energy solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/sustainable-gas-institute\/files\/2017\/03\/36797.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"362\" height=\"307\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2251\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/sustainable-gas-institute\/files\/2017\/03\/36797.jpg\" alt=\"36797\" \/><\/a>As today\u00a0is International Women&#8217;s Day (IWD), we wanted to celebrate\u00a0the contribution women are making to tackling climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Sara Budinis, a chemical engineer from Imperial College,\u00a0provides her thoughts on the subject\u00a0during\u00a0Women@Imperial Week, an annual celebration of the achievements of female staff and students at Imperial past and present.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What contributions have women made to climate change and future energy?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At Imperial College, women have contributed to finding innovative solutions for providing energy in many different ways.<\/p>\n<p>For example, there is work on\u00a0transferring waste wood material into fuel (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/people\/f.gschwend12\">Florence Gschwend, Chemical Engineering Department<\/a>) as well as research into gathering wind and vibrational energy from existing city infrastructure in order to produce renewable energy (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shell-livewire.org\/alumni\/smarter-future-programme-winners\/2016-winners\/charlotte-slingsby\/\">Charlotte Slingsby, Innovation Design Engineering MSc\/MA)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We also have researchers developing open-source biorenewable system models, providing insights into sustainable design of future biorenewable systems (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/people\/miao.guo\">Miao Guo, Chemical Engineering Department<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>What women could do to bring about change and finding solutions to tackle climate change?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/sustainable-gas-institute\/files\/2017\/03\/20170202_135211-smaller.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1007\" class=\"wp-image-2253 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/sustainable-gas-institute\/files\/2017\/03\/20170202_135211-smaller.jpg\" alt=\"20170202_135211 smaller\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nI think women&#8217;s potential is still unexplored, given that currently only 12.8% of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics workforce is female.<\/p>\n<p>Can you even imagine what would happen if we could go to 30%, 50% or even above that? At this point in time we need to inspire girls towards science and engineering, and convey\u00a0our love for our profession to our daughters (and sons ofcourse!).<\/p>\n<p>I recently attended a talk given by our vice-provost for education, Professor Simone Buitendijk, where she said that \u201cyou cannot be what you cannot see\u201d and I couldn\u2019t agree more.<\/p>\n<p>This picture was taken during that talk, and the movie \u201cHidden Figures\u201d was used to show hidden women who changed the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/sustainable-gas-institute\/files\/2017\/03\/earth-108068_1920-small.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"642\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2263\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/sustainable-gas-institute\/files\/2017\/03\/earth-108068_1920-small.jpg\" alt=\"earth-108068_1920 small\" \/><\/a>How can we nurture women&#8217;s leadership in climate change movements?<\/strong><br \/>\nA <a href=\"http:\/\/unfccc.int\/gender_and_climate_change\/items\/7516.php\">recent report from the United Nation <\/a>has shown how much women are directly affected by climate change, and this should reinforce even more our engagement into this field.<\/p>\n<p>With great power comes great responsibility (yes, we need superheroes and superpowers) and therefore we need to have a system in place to facilitate juggling the multiple commitments women have to face towards their profession but also towards their private life, for instance if they are taking care of children, relatives and family members.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, the parental responsibility should be shared, when possible, among the parents, so that having a family would not affect women more than men when in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/sustainable-gas-institute\/files\/2017\/03\/CCS-report-170516-001-smaller-ZQ.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"535\" height=\"640\" class=\"wp-image-2257 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/sustainable-gas-institute\/files\/2017\/03\/CCS-report-170516-001-smaller-ZQ.jpg\" alt=\"CCS-report-170516-001-smaller ZQ\" \/><\/a>How are you contributing?<\/strong><br \/>\nLast year, I worked on a paper\u00a0that explored\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainablegasinstitute.org\/technology-unlock-unburnable-carbon\/\">potential role of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) over the next 85 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I am currently modelling how the industrial sector could evolve into the future in order to meet our demand for material commodities while reducing its impact towards the environment.<\/p>\n<p>This module is part of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainablegasinstitute.org\/home\/muse-energy-model\/\">energy systems model called MUSE<\/a>, which is being launched in the Summer.<\/p>\n<p>The aim of the model is to\u00a0see which innovative technologies could reduce energy costs, improve efficiency, or reduce greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Here are some further thoughts from our team at the Sustainable Gas Institute:-<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/sustainable-gas-institute\/files\/2016\/02\/Yingjian-Gao-bw.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1126 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/sustainable-gas-institute\/files\/2016\/02\/Yingjian-Gao-bw.jpg\" alt=\"Yingjian Gao b&amp;w\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">&#8220;There is no wonder that women\u2019s capability in driving technological innovation and conducting statistical analysis should be appreciated. Moreover, women\u2019s advantage in conveying emotion in communication can be very useful in drawing public attention and raising public awareness to help tackling climate change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">[Yingjian Guo]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/sustainable-gas-institute\/files\/2014\/11\/sara.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"236\" height=\"235\" class=\"size-full wp-image-195 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/sustainable-gas-institute\/files\/2014\/11\/sara.jpg\" alt=\"sara\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">&#8220;There are many aspects which will make women a key player to limit climate change effects.
