Recognising AI\u2019s potential to drive efficiencies, fuel economic growth, and introduce innovative new services, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/a-blueprint-for-modern-digital-government\">the Blueprint for Digital Government<\/a>\u00a0lays the groundwork for a smarter, more responsive state.<\/p>\n<p>But to make this vision a reality, civil service leaders must be equipped to oversee AI adoption confidently and responsibly. That\u2019s why the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/the-forum\/\">Imperial Policy Forum<\/a> is thrilled to welcome twenty senior civil servants into its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/the-forum\/courses-for-policymakers\/fellowships\/\">AI Policy Fellowship Programme<\/a>, a unique initiative designed to bridge the gap between cutting-edge AI research and public sector leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its third year, the Fellowship pairs participants with academic mentors who will guide them in designing bespoke research projects. Over the next nine months, Fellows will have access to Imperial\u2019s world-leading AI experts and domain specialists already harnessing AI to tackle major societal challenges.<\/p>\n<h3>AI opportunities across government<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/the-forum\/courses-for-policymakers\/fellowships\/2025-fellows\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">2025 cohort\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">represents a diverse mix of senior leaders from sixteen departments, including the Cabinet Office, Ministry of Defence, Department for Education, Home Office and Department o<\/span><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f Science, Innovation and Technology.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-285 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/the-forum\/files\/2025\/03\/Fundementals-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"A classroom of AI Policy Fellows at Imperial College London\" \/> Among them are technical leaders driving technology adoption and data analysis, as well as senior policy and strategy officials tackling some of the country\u2019s most pressing policy challenges.<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some of this year\u2019s projects will explore how AI can enhance government capabilities in areas such as energy resilience, cybersecurity, and environmental protection. Others will focus on shaping the governance and regulatory frameworks needed to ensure the UK government\u2019s adoption of AI is secure, ethical, and trusted.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Looking ahead<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As well as their project work, the Programme will also feature four in-person sessions at Imperial College campuses, giving Fellows the opportunity to connect, share challenges, and identify opportunities for collaboration. These sessions will include academic-led lectures and workshops to enrich their research and shape meaningful outputs to be shared at the Fellowship\u2019s conclusion.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As the UK government develops its AI policy from ambition to action, this year\u2019s programme couldn\u2019t be timelier. The Fellows will come together for the first time in early-March.
