We have kept you up-to-date on the progress of our work and we are pleased to announce that our report has been published and can be accessed <a href=\"https:\/\/nhsrho.org\/research\/sickle-cell-comparative-research-to-inform-policy\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399\"><strong>1. Word Sickle Cell Day 2025<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-351 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/uk-sickle\/files\/2025\/06\/world-sickle-day-300x175.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>Today is <strong>World Sickle Cell Day<\/strong>, an initiative started in 2009 following a 2008 resolution by the United Nations&#8217; General Assembly recognising that sickle cell disease was a publc health problem and urging member states to raise more awareness of this neglected genetic condition.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sicklecellsociety.org\/\">UK Sickle Cell Society<\/a> has a campaign to &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sicklecellsociety.org\/wscd25\/#:~:text=Thursday%2019th%20June%20is%20World%20Sickle%20Cell%20Day%2C,bottom%20of%20this%20page%20to%20join%20the%20campaign.\">Tell it out loud<\/a>&#8220;. Please help us to amplify awareness of this neglected disease through one or more actions suggested by the Society, including sharing your story or giving blood.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399\"><strong>2. Launch of Sickle Cell Comparative Report to inform policy<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"83\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-314 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/uk-sickle\/files\/2025\/02\/logo-300x83.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Today, we will be presenting our comparative sickle cell research project in the House of Lords to mark the launch of our report with the NHS RHO. Our work comprised of a literature review, an analysis of specific indicators related to inequality, a study comparing hospital admissions data and a survey on experiences of inequalities among people with lived experience of sickle cell.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">Our key findings from this work included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2.5 times more research funding per person for cystic fibrosis than for sickle cell or haemophilia<\/li>\n<li>42% increase in hospital admissions for sickle cell between 2013 and 2022<\/li>\n<li>Total estimated annual hospitalisation costs two times higher for sickle cell than cystic fibrosis<\/li>\n<li>Around 2 specialist nurses per 100 patients for cystic fibrosis vs ~0.5 for sickle cell<\/li>\n<li>On average, patients with sickle cell managed 7 pain crises without medical help<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">Our key recommends focused on:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Better Data<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To improve data access and use<\/li>\n<li>To drive accountability through data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2. <strong>Better Support<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fund Action-Focused Research<\/li>\n<li>Strengthen Workforce Education<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3. <strong>Better Treatment<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure Access to Curative Therapies<\/li>\n<li>Embed Equity in Clinical Guidelines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399\"><strong>2. Other updates\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080\">Sickle cell community engagement event with NIHR, Genomics England and Imperial Healthcare NHS Trust<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In March, Rutendo volunteered at an event to focused on engaging with the sickle cell community on research. A video of the event can be viewed on youtube below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tU6TUCF0-0A\">Engagement with sickle cell community on research<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333399\">Global Congress on Sickle Cell Disease<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"108\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-363 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.imperial.ac.uk\/uk-sickle\/files\/2025\/06\/roxh4rla-300x108.png\" alt=\"\" \/> The 5th Global Congress on Sickle Cell Disease was hosted earlier this month in Abuja, Nigeria. This was really symbolic as Nigeria is the country with the largest burden of sickle cell disease.
