Meet the CSEP Team Series: Michael Ismay

Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your professional background?

I am a first year PhD student with CSEP having started in January 2025, after spending a year working in London.

I started my academic career as an economist having gained an undergraduate degree in the subject in 2021 and a postgraduate degree in 2023.

What specific research topics or areas are you most passionate about?

Regional innovation and how that can be used to improve economic outcomes for people living in more deprived areas. In line with the UK’s modern industrial strategy published this year by the government.

What attracted you to working at CSEP?

The opportunity to complete a PhD at a world-leading university such as Imperial while working alongside academics and experts in my field of interest.

What do you hope to learn or gain from your time here?

I would like to improve my skills as a researcher, gain new skills in coding, make strong connections for the future with other researchers and of course complete my PhD.

Do you have a favourite paper, study, book or project that has influenced your career path so far?

“The Wealth of Nations”, by Adam Smith and “General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money” by John Maynard Keynes

What are your interests outside your work?

I am a big fan of Motorsport, particularly Formula 1, MotoGP, the World Endurance Championship as well as watching and playing football.
